Default How much horsepower?

So heres the story. I have Banana 24 and it is currently powered by a 454 chevy out of my Winnebago. Yes thats right, with the exception of an HEI ignition and a 850cfm marine double pumper, its all Winnebago. With the stock TRS and a 23p cleaver im running in the low 50's at about 4300 rpm. Yes its been a slow summer so far...

I plan on putting another motor together but im not sure what kind of power i need to be producing. I deffinately want a solid 65mph. Possibly 70? What does it take to make one of these hulls get to these speeds? Is there a certain speed that they "Hit the wall" and take tons of power to get past?

My winnebago motor is super reliable and suprisingly easy on fuel but 52 aint gonna cut it!

Thanks guys!

Im not an expert, but i am shooting for a conservative 450 horsepower with my 454 and i hope to see 70 with TRS (Im pretty damn sure i will).

I think that 500-550 horse with trs will get you in the mid 70's. Its somewhat tough to say because not many people these days are running trs drives, im sure 20 years ago tons of people knew the answer to this question.

Hey thanks guys! I think im going to shoot for about 450 horse. I have a borg warner trans that will be freshened up over the winter as well as the drive. I'd like to keep the whole package reliable as possible.

It is said that you need to add 15 hp for every 1 mph faster you want to gospecially over 60mph. With a 24 ft boat i would assume it is not very heavy i think you rans and trs would be sufficient up to 550-580 hp

people have run big power through trs drives without blowing tons of drives, most on here say it is capable up to 800 horse if you baby it. And the merc trans while weak should be okay under 500 horse for a while anyway

I actually got it up to 55mph today! Its amazing how much farther i can trim up with the cleaver on there. I have some good parts to put another motor together. A set of Merlin heads, weiand stealth intake, and i think im going to use my camper special rotating assembly with some higher compression forged pistons but thats a whole new thread....

Thanks again guys!
