I originally took these pictures because it looked really neet seeing the 24 Banana parked next to his big "step brother" the 35 foot Cigarette flat deck. It looked like the same boat, just 1/2 scale...

Re: Banana's year and number
Post #24 ....the boat on the trailer in the factory went to California. The boat shown running "Double Trouble" was sold to a guy from New York in '79.
This same man bought the old Corsa race boat "Cocktails" from Tom Murphy and renamed it "Triton".....I drove this "Triton" in the Plymouth Mass race one year....until one engine caught on fire. As far as post #28, that is what happens to a 24 when you water it enough and use the right type of fertilizer.....one morning it just grows and becomes a 35. What is your favorite size of the old Cigarette boats from this era? 24....28...35? |
Re: Banana's year and number
The 28 would be mine.

Hello Charlie
With out question my favorite was the 35 flat deck.
I like the Banana better than the 24' fire fox or the squadron. I like the 28 Cig SS, but felt it didn't have enough freeboard. Almost like it was a stretched 24 in length, but it was never made taller. The 35 is just a simple, yet tough looking boat. Take the 35 flat deck and make the front fairing a V shape or a three panel V shape instead of the original flat fairing and I think that would look even better. |

Air Dog
Take a look at the picture of banana #1 in the water at rest and you will notice a boat without much freeboard. That is due to the weight of two 350 cu in engines and 2 TRS drives. Now compare that with a single engine banana and the freeboard problem disappears. Now think of how nice a 28SS would be as a single engine and you can see your freeboard problem is gone. The 35 with the v shape is what Don did with the windshield on the Mistress and the raised deck on the Awesome. Super boat designs, classic, timeless and all the other words that describe that look. |
Re: Banana's year and number
Top banana, just because the boat sits higher out of the water w/ less weight does not increase the freeboard... but it will decrease the draft. But then again w/ a single engine the drive is mounted lower in the boat you increase it again.
You'd either have to lower the floor or raise the sheer(rubrail line) to increase the freeboard. Others have done it by raising the fairing to give you the feel of increased freeboard(as in a 28 magnum maltese). |
