I think the bottom line is if people want it they will get it and if you make yourself harder to get than most they will go after the easier target.

One could replace some bolts with a blasting cap wired to pop on removal. Then the cops would have some DNA from a finger or two to catch the bastard.

Compact and self-contained, high value-to-weight ratio, easy to acquire and easier to sell.
