Thats smokin, what are ya running for power? Also what does the boat weigh? Thanks Cougarman |
Re: 114 at Loto
I heard there were a couple of triple black thunders there. I am wondering what they ran?

Re: 114 at Loto
Jason, your first run was a great way to start off the event!

Re: 114 at Loto
Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I believe we were the only BT that ran this year. The boat was a project of sorts between my Dad (Dennis) and I. It gave us the chance to build some big motors. They are around 1225/1250 hp. I believe the boat weighs in at 11,500 lbs dry, but we were running with half full tanks (holds 320 gallons). We have seen 118mph on gps and still accelerating. The boat isn't really setup for top speed. The boat handles like it is on rails. It just sat there running down the course at 117 on the gps with 2' rollers coming at it from the side. There is an easy 10-15 mph left in the boat with some different props and a little more dailing in. We are happy though being the fastest V-Bottom at the shootout this year besides the Outerlimits. More for next year..... :D :D -Jason

Every Black Thunder owner on the planet is proud!! Keep dialing it in. By the way, if I read every entry correctly, I think the fastest Fountain was 109 :D :D :D :D

Re: 114 at Loto
jason, i would assum #6's, but curious to your drive set up and what originally came in the 43. my wife and i had been looking at the 460's but could not afford new drives every other weekend and was not interested in the triple engine setup. congrats on a great run and as stated before, you were a great kickoff for the runs on saturday. boat looked awesome. hammer

Re: 114 at Loto
The boat is a model year 2000 and was originally rigged as twin staggered dry -sump #6s and naturally aspirated 598's built by Dennis and Jason. A couple of years ago the motors were reconfigured and rebuilt with superchargers. - Dennis

Re: 114 at Loto
Do you have low noise restrictions in MN? That thing was quite. Do you think the turndowns reduce HP any?

Re: 114 at Loto
What about the HP loss? Its a shame you can't let them roar.

Re: 114 at Loto
What makes this boat, and the speed that it runs, so remarkable is that the boat has a full interior, not a half cabin or "cover girl" interior and the exhaust is connected to full-time mufflers in the engine compt.
There are only 2 exhaust outlets on the transom, from the mufflers, and that's it. Granted the thru-hull ex. outlets are approx. 7" in dia. If someone was looking for a fantastic Black Thunder, this would be the one, in my opinion. If I had the $$$, I would buy it. First I would have to sell my 38 Cigarette though. |

Hey, thanks GK. I've been meaning to post some more info here but just haven't gotten to it and didn't have pics.
There are 2 cans inside the boat that are 36"x12" where the 2 exhuast pipes enter and the exhuast and water mixes to deaden down alot of the sound. Exiting the can/muffler, it flares from an 8" outlet to 6.5" outlet and then has a 6.5" downturn on the transom. We don't think there is much, if any hp loss because the back pressure is under 1psi. We also did acceleration tests with the boat, and it did 0-60 in 9.8 secs (includes getting on plane) and 60-100 in about 10.4secs. It was hard to get accurate readings because there was gps lag. If anything, the times are a little on the long side. |

Also, the pipes routed the way the are to get into the cans make it really easy to work on the boat. Saves a lot of gumby work. -JP

Chris, you should post your speedo pic also!! Sax and Dennis are still trying to figure out how to catch my alcohol fueled engines. I told them just to start drinking alot and the engines will magically run harder :party-smiley-004: |
