this weekend a very good friend of mine was running his 39 Activatorin the 70 mph range, just finishing a high speed rip when all of a sudden she slides out and after sliding sideways a hundred feet or so continues to come all the way around !!! totally out of the blue !! he amazed at what the hell happend. gathers himself for a few trims up the drives to see both lowers COMPLETELY GONE !! gets towed to his ramp, pulls out the boat and sure enuff it appears that while the boat had been sitting at marina someone attempted to steal his lowers and must have gotten disturbed while doing so. remaining studs and nuts must have backed themselves out while he was running her...he's a very very lucky man !!

I heard a story about a friend of a friend taking on water after transom housing bolts broke the other day. Apparently it was a couple of the bolts going through the transom that broke. This is a new one on me, i've never heard of something like that.
It seems just about any little thing can go wrong on a fast boat. You just have to be fanatical about maintenance, i guess.
There should be velocity fuses in the steering system to prevent accidents due to a blown line, though. That's one design feature that could probably save a few peoples asses down the road.

That sounds like it came way at the end of the grape vine...
The owner knows the waters all too well to fall victim to the shallows...
Now on the other hand, if they lost their steering, it is very possible it accidently ended up in the shallows.

Actually it was a little higher up the vine, and you are right the owner knows the water very well. A friend of mine got the story from someone that was on the boat and the owner may not have been driving.
