looks a bit bigger than 16.

I'd say they said 16 instead of a 36'... Looks like a twin step bottom, maybe a gladiator??

36 Gladiator is my guess
|
Cash Bar again? :evilb:
them Glads sure are hard to handle. Who designed them trouble boat designs? Skippy?? |
"We were just going 50 and the boat flipped"...put down the taco dude, it does not happen that way. I say driver error, these idiots make a bad name for all performance boaters, they make the average land lubber think these are unsafe at any speed when in fact they are as safe as the tool driving it. I sure hope they investigate this, I say something does not add up here. Nice boat though, steps, staggers...nice set up, too bad it didn't come with a driver.
|
Thank goodness everyone is ok, regardless of the reason for the accident...

Maybe because these boats are getting cheaper, the average guy with a little cash and no knowledge can own one. But, to go to dinner directly from the scene, when you are wet and your boat is floating upside down in the bay? WTF?

I see a Stepped hull + booze = idiot behind wheel :D
|
is there a certain way you drive a step hull? whats all the buzz about? what makes it dangerous?

Yes there is a certain way you drive a step hull. In high speed turns you do not trim the drives in past level and you need to lift the tabs to level or past level. This keeps the rear of the boat in the water so it does not spin around or roll on you.
I have much more to say but, temper my remarks by only saying there is much more to this. I really wish more boat operators would recognize the risk and get onboard before our insurance gets even higher. Is anyone keeping score? How many accidents so far this year? |
Just slow down or take a long sloooping turn not a hard crank turn. I have a 42 lightning and you just have to be aware of what is going on around you. Long slow and carefull, just glad the people are ok. Cappone I bet there is a nice 36 foot for rebuild:D
|
Not that it would have made a difference, but one thing I haven't heard (in all of these unfortunate posts) is how the boat is propped.
Eg. The first set of props we tried on the boat made it MUCH more sensitive in tight turns, causing the boat to feel like it "could" be susceptable to rolling etc... if caught with an unsuspecting wave etc... With the new props, the CG feels much better and the boat turns in a much more comfortable manner ---- to boot.... these new props are also SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the previous set. P.S. This post is not to "bash" or "edify" any one propeller company (one prop certainly does not fit all... rather, the top prop companies are all excellent -- and different), but rather to share an insight that seems to have not been discussed much. P.S. Brad is right IMO... when in doubt (or unexperienced), GET HELP!!!! Joe |

WOW!!! You forgot to add... I am glad everyone lived and we did not have an unfortunate ending. I would call Taco Tuesday a good ending to a boat flip. And as for boats getting cheaper causing more accidents??? That cannot be the end of that theory can it? What does the price of a boat have to do with the drivers willingness to drive it safely? |
This is what Powerboat Magazine said about step hulls.."they are like being on ball bearings, it feels like there are wheels under the boat and then a big hand comes down and flips the boat. Only on step boats though" So, what he is saying is God hates step hulls.:D I'm just messin' with ya.:D :D
|
well I need to get pointed to the "step hulls for dummies" section because I have one and know nothing about its characteristics. Maybe its a good thing my eliminator never went past 35mph so I could educate myself. Now if they could only fix the damn thing..... thats another story, Ive been reading about to many accidents lately... not good my friends.

Too bad that most folks around here totally dismiss their poor judgement. I hope realization sets in. . . .or we ALL will be w/o insurance some day. |

Divided by the Root Mean Square Law of Legality........meaning for being twice as dumb.......it will cost you 4 times as much........ Then again, I could be wrong.........I'm doing math before 8am... |
Glad no one got hurt.
Even if the guy that was driving is a jackazz. |

I will say it for you Brad... These Fukin idiots just go buy a boat with no experiance and no clue as to what can happen, and it really pisses me off when I hear there are kids on board, and other boaters around. I have no first hand knowledge as to what happened, but it was no mechanical error, or "those damn stepped hull" boats are unstable. We all know this guy turned high speed, maybe with tabs down, but more importantly has no experiance to react or know when the boat is in trouble. "TAKE THE TRES MARTIN PERFROMANCE SCHOOL!!!" I learned so much from the school, and how the boat reacts ... and most important WHY the boat reacts as it does . I am by far no expert and certainly dont drive the boat beyond my means even with the school, but there are alot of people who have years and years of high performance boating experiance that would be in the same position as this idiot. With out the knowledge.. experiance means nothing. P.S. If a drive fell off in the middle of his turn .. I apologize for my above statement ! |
The only thing that I have to add to this thread is.............check out the third line in my signature.

In addition to the owner stating he was only going 50mph and it "just flipped" this morning they had a longer interview and he also mentioned he was turning the boat. If the number of people thrown out (6) is correct what were 6 people doing in a Gladiator anyway?

Does anyone else think the reason for running to dinner was to cover up being under the influence? Seem to me if he got to the bar, ordered a few cold ones the cops would have a harder time proving he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Although fleeing the scene probably isn't cheap either!
|
There is NO way that is a 16foot. 45-50 my ass, they had to be doing at least 60+. I would have to say this is a driver error for sure.
