'04 Lip-Ship Gun destroyed

Little details at this time but the boat went into the woods sometime Sunday night on the Tickfaw River, about 1/2 mile below our place. No pictures of the site of the crash but boat is over 300 feet into the woods, yet captain stated they were running 40mph. Debating lifting the remains of the boat out of the woods by helo.

Fisherman that reported the accident said they were running "very fast" and the boat "skidded out" in the turn. Everyone was tossed from the boat prior to it turning into the woods.

Thank God no one was seriously injured. Bumps and bruises and that's about it. Had this taken place during the day, that portion of the river would have surely been very crowded with anything from wake boarders to party barges. Damn shame and of course, with the boat traveling that far into the woods, there were surely no lanyards on.:angry-smiley-038:

Chris Sunkin 06-10-2008 03:45 PM

300 feet? I'd love to read the accident reconstruction report when it's done. To get that far, you'd have to travel a substantial amount of it airborne.

Agreed! We know a few of the local Wildlife and Fisheries agents and I'm sure there will be some interesting facts come to light as this investigation goes on. My neighbor passed the site 2 or 3 times without even seeing the boat!! The boat clipped a pretty large tree off at the base as it entered the woods so there was some pretty good velocity there. Keep in mind when I say woods, this entire area is somewhat of a swamp so there is some water for the props to continue churning. I bet the boat looked like a pinball up in there though.

There is a 3' X 4' section of the hull side that was pulled from the water leaning against this guys river house. Sad to see.

Thunderstruck 06-10-2008 04:17 PM

Watched a program on TV that had the Tickfaw/Diversion Canal/Marepas featured from the perspective of the La DWF officers. The Tickfaw is not a very forgiving river when going fast.

Glad everyone is OK.

Comanche3Six 06-10-2008 04:41 PM

That was a beautiful powerboat. Damn shame.

tomcei 06-10-2008 05:05 PM

no lanyard!! some people have more money than brains.

I wonder who is actually going to name their boat:

That is the 2nd gun to end up in the cypress stumps. Storm Debris ended up there a couple years back at the Ticfaw Poker Run...........

It was a great looking boat. The detail on the grab handles and interior parts was amazing. It was like the paint was worn off and you could see carbon fiber underneath.

The guy is my neighbor and we bought both our boats on the same weekend at Phil's. Truly a shame just thankful no one was hurt.

fast22 06-10-2008 05:56 PM

Damn! Glad everyone was Ok! We saw him Sunday evening, he was headed up Diversion as we were heading out to the lake. That was a beautiful boat.
Part of my wifes responibility on the the boat is to remind me about my lanyard every time I get behind the wheel. Things happen real fast at 50mph+. Maybe he'll learn from this.

QWKRN U 06-10-2008 08:06 PM

wow glad no one was seriously injured. its just another reminder guys and gals. Hook those lanyards up. The life you save may be your own.

stecz20 06-11-2008 07:32 AM

that was a very nice gun, too bad.. gald everyone is ok.....

racer-x6 06-11-2008 10:46 AM

That makes two Cigs that have fallen to the Tickfaw trees.

That was another neighbor of mine's boat and another nice one to boot. He had just sold it prior to last years Tickfaw 200.

I saw pictures of the current wreck this morning and they weren't exaggerating about it being 300+ feet into the woods. The pictures were taken from the edge of the trees and if you didn't know there was a boat back there, you would never see it.

Maybe I need to demagnetize the nose of mine to keep it from pulling towards the trees!!:party-smiley-004:

Even though it's not mine, it still pi$$e$ me off to see that!

Croozin,
Left early sun afternoon so I did not know until reading this. We know who you are talking about and so glad no one was seriously hurt. Did anyone witness the accident? I also heard that Teddy had a mishap at the mouth of river a few weeks ago. River is indeed getting lot more tighter with all the "bass pro boats".
Lea working the firemans @ sun buns and none of my crew could make the run so I beleave I am bumming ride with Hackley on "seas the day". You going? Come see us at the capt's party at Lizzies fri nite. Be cool and BE SAFE.

Kenny, seems like every weekend you're off work, I'm out of town. We had already planned to go to Destin this weekend to visit with some friends. FPC has a poker run going there as well so we are going to do some sightseeing Saturday. Y'all enjoy and BE CAREFUL DAMMIT! You gonna be off work for Royal Purple?

As far as the accident goes, a fisherman was running a trout line that night and saw the accident and called 911. He said the boat was traveling "very fast" and it seemed to "skid out" in the turn (read: turned a TS boat too hard with the bow down). Everything happened in the pitch black of night so who really knows what happened. But, all in all, like you said at least no one was seriously injured. Could have been MUCH worse.

Edited: here are two pics taken from someone who waded up into the woods with hip boots on. First pic is of the 24" diameter tree that was clipped off.

Cruel Irony - boat is named "Hard Hitter"

Chris Sunkin 06-11-2008 04:42 PM

That boat will be on Ebay by 4th of July fully repaired and no mention of the mishap ;)

I'd love to wade up in there and ease off with those 525s and ITS but I heard that was the only way they were able to locate the boat right after the wreck - the engines screaming up in the woods!

Probably stretched a couple rod bolts but I'd still love to get my hands on that hardware!:evilb:

team Tickfaw 06-11-2008 05:13 PM

Croozin,
I will be home for the royal purple run. Swapped out a week with my releif. Gave him the 4th of july. We got a parking spot at the prop stop. Lea told me she spoke to you a few weeks ago. Lets do the capt's party in Baton Rouge that thursday. Going down river, what side was it on? Did not realize it happened at night!!!!!!!! Sounds like a repeat of what happened to "storm debri" a while back. Lets all take notice and remember that we are responsible for all our passengers safety and the people around us.

Capt's party at Hooters? OK, twist my arm!!!:drink:

The wreck happened in almost the same spot as Storm Debris. Maybe one curve more or less and on the same side, to the left going down stream.

Law enforcement will be like flies on $hit for the rest of the Summer. Definitely will be drinking some vitamin water until we get the boat back on the lift in the evenings.

team Tickfaw 06-13-2008 12:41 PM

Croozin,O.K. See you at the capt party then. 7 pm thursday. Not the hooters on college drive. Last year we all gathered up after and went to Gold Club. VERY interesting. Lea wore glitter for a week.

What an idiot!

johnnyboatman 06-16-2008 09:09 PM

and thats why its so phuckin hard to get reasonable insurance rates, thank god everyone was ok.

DareDevil 06-16-2008 10:16 PM

If he has 380 K-plans on there ,i would like to buy them .
Could someone ask him if he would sell them ?!:D

Maybe wait till he calms down a bit.

And lucky that no one was hurt.

DD, proabably a good idea on the cooling off period! He is my neighbor but I don't think I want to approach him this soon after the incident!! But, when I ask him about my 525s and ITS, I'll ask about your K-Planes too!:D

No tellin what will happen to this boat. From what I hear, it could be repaired. But, unless insurance is going to cover the bill, I wouldn't want to dump that much money back into it. Part it out and start over.

I've kept quiet, but I totally agree......this will put a lot more attention on the Top Guns in the river AGAIN this summer. Can't really blame the Law for it......this sort of incident is making a bad name for all of us! Most of the police attention was previously focused on the smaller boats.

Wouldn't be surprised if a speed limit is posted on the river in the near future.

Straight bottom or stepped, the throttles will move in both directions........especially when turning!!!

Can't agree more with everything you said. We typically don't get harassed much because I don't like attracting unnecessary attention to our boat. I maintain a safe speed, observe the "rules of the road" and keep my passengers on the calm side. I don't mind anyone having a good time but when you start acting stupid, you will find yourself on the nearest dock - and quickly.

I, too, look for a speed limit very soon and much more stringent "courtesy stops". Just another incident at a river that has a very unforgiving history. There has been at least a fatality a year for the past several. Maybe we will get out of this one without another.

Hi there,
if he realy thinks about repairing it ? I know the company to go to, It would be alot stronger and still run the same than it did.
The Guy there know's his $hit, had my old boat repaired there and i am racing the pi$$ out of it. NO problems what so ever.
And ya still ask him about the tabs, i only need the bottom plates not the whole thing.
Thanks.

Hey guys..what's the itinerary..where is the Capt. meeting and where is the pre party on Friday..Thanks Jeff

I also wanted to say I'm glad that no one was hurt, and a lesson was learned not only by the driver and occupants but it will teach us all to be more careful and considerate when operating a vessel with this big poker run coming this weekend. Let's all be safe out there..no alcohol till finished, no late night driving to fast...and...only thongs and no bongs on all boats, at least that should be brought up at the drivers meeting:D

team Tickfaw 06-17-2008 04:35 PM

Capt party thursday nite at 7 pm Hooters in Baton Rouge. There is 2 hooters, it is NOT the one on college drive. Forgot what the name of street its on. This is one we go to.
Capt party Friday nite at Hooters in New Orleans, have to go to web site to see address.
Friday from 2-7 PM at Sun Buns (canal at Manchac Pass) bar will be open and live band "Wasted Days" will be playing. Good local band. This will be a good pre-run and a chance to just hang out with some really down to earth good people.
Friday night will be a good time to be had at Tin Lizzies as always with all the locals. This is where Lea and I will be. Resturant is open also till around 9 pm.
Jassman hope to meet you and all others at some point over weekend. You can ask anyone behind bar at sun buns or Tin Lizzies and they will point us out.
You are right about the drinking and driving. Sunday night wildlife and fisheries had a check point at the no wake zone at Tin Lizzies. Have never seen that and I'm there most every weekend. Seen a couple of people get hauled in to the "drunk shack" under the bridge over the weekend also. Our TV coverage from the river on TRU TV was not very flattering and and we may see an increase in boat checks.

Kenny/Jass, it's the Hooters on Siegen Lane. Very easy to find. If you're coming in from the Tickfaw, take 12 to Airline Highway, go South on Airline Hwy a couple miles to Siegen Lane. The intersection is Siegen if you turn right and Sherwood Forest Blvd to the left. Turn right and Hooters is down about a mile. If you pass I-10 you've gone too far.

See you guys there.

I'm gonna try to get outta the shop around 4:30 if possible and make a run to Sun Buns. If nothing else, I've gotta get gas Friday evening.

B one 06-17-2008 06:26 PM

What kind of fuel mileage does that boat get on land?

team Tickfaw 06-17-2008 06:57 PM

Croozin, We will get to hooters around 7 I think. Don't know if we will take boat out friday or not. Put gas in her before we left last weekend. May just drive Lea's "scooter pooter" over to sun buns and get Damon to pick us up.
Have you SEEN the water in Mauspas???? It is lime green. Never seen this before. Did the firemans run and was shocked. Heard it was from when spillway gates were open.
Talked to the people that picked up the two that were in the water from the accident. Is the boat still in the trees? Looked for the entry into the swamp and never could find it.....

team Tickfaw 06-17-2008 08:53 PM

Thanks for the directions. Never been to this one.

mpally 06-17-2008 09:58 PM

How the hell are they going to get that boat out of there?

Croozin2 06-18-2008 10:46 AM

Actually, got the boat out Monday. Cut a bunch of trees to get some room, used come-alongs to get it near the water's edge and lifted it with a track-hoe and set it on a barge. Rumor is insurance is picking up the tab and all they want out of the boat is engines/drives. The rest will probably be salvaged. Shame.
