Underwater Boat Lighting
What is the law for having underwater lighting while you drive - is it legal in Ca?
I saw a video with them on a Cig at night and thought it looked awesome but I didn't know if it was legal - anyone have any idea's? |
I have a friend that developed a LED underwater light and from what we have heard the white and green are OK when running. The blue is sorta grey area because it is same as FWC and water police. He put a do not run them while underway as CYA in his product.

If you get pulled over they should have a better reason than " I'm sorry, but I could see you in the dark".:drink:
Boats and airplanes both have the same color positions and they are not for the looks of them but rather for the other pilot(s) looking at you and figuring out what way you're traveling. There are also similar laws in the trucking (and for even our autos) world when it comes to the "chicken" lights and their colors. They are not to having red forward facing lights and yellow rear facing unless it is a turn signal. With red and yellow being the only legal colors at night. So, as I am sure there are no laws currently on the books but if extra lights become a problem or a collision happens then there will. They just passes a law in MO about the white docking lights... boats cannot run with them on. So that kind of blows "the more you can see the better" thought out of the water. My thoughts.... these lights are killer and I really like them and would like to get a set myself, but turn them on when coming into port or docking at the bar. But while underway, I really do not want to see a big glowing ball of blue/red/green/purple/(insert your color here...) lights at night and me having to try and figure out if it is coming at me or running with me. Kept your safe and you'll keep others safe. |
I agree with the law on not running docking lights, if you happen to be going to other way you can't see $hit, same concept as pointing a spotlight at another boat.

There are very specific federal laws about lighting. I am very certain those underwater lights are not legal underway. It would not matter if they are underwater or over water if you can see them, they could confuse other boaters for navigation purposes. I have the Coast Guard Regulations book. It is lengthy and very clear about what is allowed. Size of the boat direction of the light and styles are all very exact.

Here is a cool YouTube Vid...They cahnge colors!
|
We all just run brown/tan lights on the Illinois River. Sure is hard to tell if you have a light out though.
|
just curious, but how do these lights mount to the boat? I really like the looks of the blue lights.

Good thread guys. I am interested in these but only to use while docked. Do they need to be mounted below the water line?

Normally they mount below the water line just to cool them, bu the OceanLED can operate when running.....the non-LED types cannot both becuase they get too hot and the vibration of the boat kills the bulb life. |

I actually answered my own question when I read a little farther. |
Here's a link to a thread from WakeWorld where a couple guys took all of the underwater lights and did a test. Very informative reading for anyone interested. They used the Abyss lite, OceanLED, and any other light on the market that was available.

I'll let you all in a trade secret.. all the LED light companies use the same LEDs there made by Philips and there calles Hi Flux.. they cost $2.95 each http://68.80.236.47/sortjunk.jpg All the companies use the same some mount them in molded plastic housing like OceanLEDS some mount them in Aluminum housings and I mount them in Brass.. so here is the break down $2.95 x 12 =$35 plus the cheap plastic housing[injection molding is cheap ] maybe tops $1.00 total is $36 and change the sell them for $600 each there is no way they got $550 in labor and assembly cost EACH... I sell mine for $129 each and still make a 200% profit..And I test Ocean's and wakemagic against mine there was no difference but the price.. we all get and use the same LEDs Nobody has their own SMD factory it all comes from China I buy em up like Ocean and WakeM by the sheet. Just tring to save money for my fellow boater BRASS IS FOR EVER Aluminum turns to white rust and Plastic well you know gets yellow and brittle.. your money oh I will rebuild your light for $20 for Life Ocean after year will say Sorry just send another $600 That is what I was thinking. |
