Nav Lights All Around White Stern
USCG regs advise I need to put an all around white light on my boat...I see Cigarettes and other manufacturers use a stern mounted light.
Where is everyone mounting the all around light. I need to keep the mount clear of the cockpit cover..it also needs to be removeable ......any ideas. |
My Cig has a stern light, as well as a pole mounted light that mounts on the deck just in front of the cabin. Its a two position light, all around when anchored and just forward when underway, and the stern light provides the reast of the 360 view when underway.

thanks for the reply..I did notice that on the Cigarette site. I dont think I want the light in front of me on the deck...I am going to have to find a flush mount style base that I can put on the deck of the trasom area.

I have the same except I have the light pole coming up out of the transom so it is behind me.

I do not want to hijack the thread but since we are talking about the "white nav lights" can anyone suggest one that has less glare? When we run at night the damn white light really takes away from any night vision I may have and I hopping there are some that deflect the light up and out and not down into the cockpit.
We have 4' pole style on the stern that is removable right now. Thanks |
nevermind..

Thanks!

Prior Coast Guard boarding officer here. While under way you are only required to have a 135 degree white stern light and 112.5 degree red and green towards the bow. You only need the 360 degree white above the highest fixed object on the vessel while at anchor.

This is very interesting and makes perfect sense to me.
All the literature I have seen only mentions the 360˙white light. Does anyone know if they make a pole type 135˙white nav light? |
Ok.... I found it!
http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/mwv/navrules/rotr_online.htm Rule 21 3. "Sternlight" means a white light placed as nearly as practicable at the stern showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 135 degrees and so fixed as to show the light 67.5 degrees from right aft on each side of the vessel. OK... this is probably a stupid question, but do the rules change state by state or will apply to ALL vessels? |
Those are federal laws and go for every state on the great lakes, pacific, atlantic and lake tahoe (Lakes are considered federal when they are bordered by 3 or more states)

Here are the lopolights to give you an idea.

Guys based on personal experience on Lake Michigan and the way I read Rule 23(power driven vessels underway) from NoWake's link, you have to run a 135 stern and the forward mast light while underway. I have been stopped numerous times because I was not running my mast light on an old Formula. If you read section d) it says for the Great Lakes you can run just a single 360 white instead of the 135 stern and 225 mast light.

My local (well equipped) marine store does not have it. The one on my cig has stopped working. I'd like to replace pole and base |

Would anyone know where to get the replacent for this light?

I'd like to replace pole and base I believe this is the one you want, and I never could find just the pole, you can buy the base separately, but not the pole, go figure. Of course, I have been wrong at least twice before. :) http://gator49.hostgator.com/~zeromy...213_51_103_104 http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=86019F http://www.offshorewake.com/store/Pe...LL-ROUND-LIGHT |

Had this glare problem with all around white stern light - check out the Perko Marine Lamp catalogue and they sell a shade that attaches under the lamp on their light pole - shades the hull and not the light - very cool and it works! Donzi 22ZX came with the Perko Marine stern pole.
