Every year I check the portable fire extinguishers to see if the indicator needle is still in the green. I figure I'm good to go. NOT ANY MORE!
Effective April 20, 2022, if your boat came with a fire extinguisher and is over 12 years old. You are probably in violation and you will receive a ticket if you are boarded by the Coast guard or fish and game for a safety check.
Outboards under 26 ft do not need a fire extinguisher. But they're good to have.
Will put a link down explaining who and who doesn't need a fire extinguisher. And for those who do. How many you need on board.http://www.boatus.org/fire-extinguishers/FireFAQ.pdf

They are cheap, replace them. I just replaced my Fireboy on board extinguisher system this year. It was very old, halon. Light was still green on dash. took it out. opened it up and nothing. Not even air. New one was 900.00 and even has a pressure gauge on it. And light is green.

Not for portable handheld disposable fire extinguishers that you find in The galley storage or cockpit storage area. Only fire extinguishers that are refillable. Like the ones in the machinery spaces.
