281 Maxxum - Mounting 454's?
Hey,
This is my first V-8 installation (in a boat), and I feel like a proud father to be. And I'm having twins!
Anybody know of a site with some clear guidelines for setting the mounts? I do have Mercury Manuals coming, but I haven't always found the information to be complete, if ya know what I mean.
Any help is much appreciated - Nigel

Im sure the holes for the mounts are already in your stringers. You will need the alignment tool. You will need to get the mounts bolted to the stringers, then drop motor in place. bolt the rear of the engine to the inner transom, then to adjust the front mounts, you must raise or lower the front of the engine with the lower nuts on the mount. To get the correct setting, the alignment bar mus slide into the coupler easlily thru the gimble bearing. Not sure if this makes sense to you, someone may be able to explain it better.

Thanks for the reply - since this post I have learned a lot, rec'd both engine and bravo outdrive manuals and the alignment tool and figured that was the way to do it.
Yes, there are multiple holes in the area where the lag bolts would hold down the mounts - it's well used. I should probably mix up some epoxy when I get the lags positioned.
I see there is enough flexibility where the flywheel housing and transom plate hinge to provide the up and down required to align.
Thanks...

That boat you bought I believe was without power for a little while. If any water got in the holes where the lag bolts go in, it may have some rot in there. That is not good. I would get a long ice pick, and go in those holes and see how far in you can go.
rotdoctor.com may come in handy here. they sell stuff you can inject into the stringer, to help restore it without totally replacing it, if it aint bad.
