Where are my Baja brothers?

Looks like the Baja section was hijacked and changed to the Checkmate section so I figured I would find the Baja crowd here. Where is everybody??? Hope you real Checkmate guys don't mind the company. :)

Welcome, as long as the boat was built here in Bucyrus, I really don't care who built it.

Have had 2 boats from Ohio; loved 'em both. Can't wait to see what Checkmate will bring to the market in the coming years. The ones I've looked at appeared to be very well built, just wasn't what I was looking for at the time.

I will say this, if Checkmate becomes the new Baja, i will sell my little classic C-mate and NEVER buy another C-mate!!! And this is after selling C-mates, wrenching on C-mates, and owning many C-mates.... I hope this is not a RIP for C-mate...

I missed all the action, what happened???

Checkmate has many very nice products in their line up and some real great people that want to build on the name and move the company forward.

I see many good things in their future.

I am not worked up at all. Just staing that if Smith turns Checkmate into a mass produced cooky cutter, I am done with them...:grinser010:

If this rumor is true what would you call the boats?

Baja by Checkmate
Baja by Checkmate formally by Fountian
Beckmates
Chajas
Checkmajas

You can mass produce qaulity, both Mike and Kip Combs have told me that it was common for Checkmate to produce 60-70 boats a week in the mid 80's. Right now mass production is the number of fingers you have on (one) hand per week for most boat companies. I think that when you see the new Checkmates at the boat shows, you will see what I see...

Of course you can mass produce quality, many do it, Baja was not one of them for many years, and they were cooky cutter boats. Where I live, I got tired of seeing 10 of them all tied up together that all looked the same.

To be honest, it is not the boat I hate so much, it is the attitude of many of the owners, many of them think their chit don't stink, and I do not care what you own, that is a piss poor attitude!!!

Also, not knocking Mate, but I would not call mid 80's Checkmates QUALITY! The molds were gerat, but the rest left some to be desired! Cmate should admit to this too! There were many corners cut and for those of us who have owned or own boats from this era know it all to well from all of the unprotected wood that has to be replaced... If in fact Cmate put out that many boats then, it shows... I did not start selling and working onmates until 90, so I can't say one way or another on those numbers...
