Motor mounts
1 Attachment(s)
I did some searching and talked to a couple people about switching my 89' 251 convincor to off-shore style mounts.
Heard and read a lot of "no need" replies. Well, while the engine was out I had noticed some cracks around where the stock mounts met the floor and on the front side of the mount on the corner. So I decided that since i was in there playing with glass and resin,I would swap over to off-shore. Boy am I glad I did!!!! Look what I found:eek:   So rather than glass in new old style, I think it would be better and easier to swap. With the old out of the way, I'm going to glass with double bias mat from the floor up the stringer and over the top. |
The mount completly removed

Glad I didn't fix the cracks and drop the new 502 in... |
Lucky you checked it out!!

The mount bolts were in solid wood, but that top piece was the only solid piece!!!!!!!!

opened up access holes, cleaned out some foam. The area that I ground down on the floor, then down the stringer and out approx 4-5" on the bottom is going to get another layer of double bias glass mat.

made up the mounts yesterday.
6x6 3/8" aluminum. Cut 9" long, cut one leg down to 4". The backing is same material just cut the corner off. The side of the stringer that is in the hole is not the same thickness all the way to the bottom. I'm going to fill it in and add an other layer of glass to that side also. I don't think they'll go anywhere.:D :D |
Looks good. What offshore mount are you going with ?
|
The one there are pitured in previous post.

Finished cleaning up the engine compartment, fixed the transom holes that i no longer needed or wanted.
I just didn't like the way some things had been done. Washed the hole thing with acetone and really coarse pad made for paint stripping. D/A'ed the hole thing with 80 grit and washed with acetone again.Coated with air dry gel coat which I tinted to match the exterior of the hull. The mounts are in. Caulked the backs of the mounts as well as the back of the backing plates and bolted them in. Closed up the holes, And finished with gel coat. |

Also been working on interior.
In the end of the 80's, early 90's, "wilsonart" came out with a new non-flamable contact adhesive. I'm a cabinet maker by the way. They didn't do enough testing on this stuff. What happened is that over time (3-4 years) the glue was breaking down. We replace a lot of counters the were delaminating. Well, my boats interior was also done with this glue. The laminate was falling off everywere so it need to be redone also. This wasn't in the plan for this year but..... There was a spot were the battery was mounted were the floor was soft, pulled the carpet up and it smelt like battery acid. I think the original mount had been mounted with steel screws that had rotted off, letting the battery flop around. It had gone over and the acid got into the wood thru the holes and soaked the area. A little corner of the panel over the gas tank was soft also. I had to do it right, so inorder to get the gas tank panel out, the bulkhead had to come out. For that to come out, the cabinets had to come out. While they were out, I finished peeling the laminate that wasn't falling off and relaminated. Before |

I'm in windsor. Have a goal of June 1st:rolleyes:  I don't know....... |
Looks great!! I don't mean to be critical, but I was wondering why you re-covered the access holes you cut next to the stringers? What if the nuts loosen up?
|
We'll, I use a good marine adhesive/caulk on the back of the mounts, the back of the backing plates, and in the holes going thru.
Used nylocks, and caulked the threads as well as the ends of the bolts after they where tite. I figure that if they do loosen up, I'll cut for 4" or 6" round deck plates. Thought about covering the holes with some stainless diamond plate. It would look like there where steps. It's now April 30, and i want to get this done for summer. Glassing over the holes was quickest. Material in stock. |
Super Job, looks great !
|
Wish i had a job doing this kind of work.
Anybody looking? Never to old for a career change when it's something you like to do. |
Again---GREAT JOB!! I see your point about covering the access holes.

Went to the outside of the transom and finished up there.
Fixed all the holes there that I didn't need or am relocating. I've got about 2' of space behind the the boat to work so I didn't take any before pics. pulled the boat out to get some after. Leveled everything out and re-gelcoated all the patches. Mixed color from white base and added tints to match. Looks real good for first time mixing gel. If you didn't know where to look, you can't see fixed areas In this pic just the transom assembly is in. Finished the steering rams, trim tabs, thru hull fittings and tie down hooks tonight. Will post next time I pull boat forward. |
How's the progress ? Keep us junkies alive I need more photo's so I can get pumped up to do mine !! Looks great so far !
|
check back in about an hour.
I'll go take some new pics. |

Still have to finish steering hoses.
Haven't decided what i'm going to do with the trim tab hoses. I don't want to use the old covers that goes over the hose. Will probably get a couple thru hulls for them. |
Inside Transom

Moved the trim tab motor over to make room for the steering fittings. Still have exhaust holes to cut:crazy:  . But that will wait until the engine is in place.

The lighting makes it look different but it is pretty close to the Burgundy of the hull stripes.:D :D :D

Sweet engine. What mod's have you done ?
|
none.
Changed the head gaskets to Fel-Pro's. Spent enough $$$$$ for this year. Maybe over next winter I may pull the heads, change to Manley valves and change to a HP500 cam and valve train. We'll see how it runs this year. |
Almost There
I'm finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
I'll get some pics posted tomorrow or next day |
