Own a Stinger or a Scorpion? Stingerfest 2005.

Ok, because so many of you have old Stingers and Scorpions, and it seems that they are actually COOL again....whoo hoo.

It has been suggested that we have a "Stingerfest" and get as many Stingers and Scorpions together for the admiring public to check out.

It would be cool to see 6 or 12 Stingers at the same place at the same time.

So... it also seems that a bunch of us are on Lake Erie.
(Makes sense, since these are awesome rough water boats).

If you are interested, please post a suggested day or weekend, as well as a possible location. Then I can check the location/dates against the boating event calendar on Lake erie and we can come up with something.

The Islands would be an obvious choice, but depending on what weekend, we couldn't get all the Stingers docked together.

Toledo would be easy to find docks, (and get them all together in one place) but that would be pretty far for the folks from Cleveland east.

My only BAD weekend is June 4, 5.

What do the rest of you think?
This would be of more interest to me than many other options, because of my interest in Stingers.

Could be a good idea!
I'm from montreal, canada. I'm roughly 8 hours from georgian bay, ontatio, and don't really know how far from there, or from montreal you are (lake erie) July is a big poker run month: june 18 New-York, june 24-25 Alex Bay, july 1-2 hull.quebec, july 22-23 georgian bay, july 29-30 Montreal (my place) and august 13-14 1000 islands, finally toronto sept 16-17.

Although I wish to go at all of them, I probably won't be able for different reasons, but I think it's important for you to know it so we have the best chances to be as many stinger as possible!

So, how far ere you from, let's say, Montreal?

Fund,

The Islands are easier for us. We've never been to Toledo but that's not out of the question.

We will have to schedule something in July/August. Not sure exactly when the boat will be in the water but we're shooting for no later than 2nd week of June. We have a Poker Run the 3rd week of June, Beach Party at Sandusky Bay the last weekend of June and Port Stanley Canada July 4th weekend.

There are no bad weekends after that in July/August.

You could always come without the boat. One of us would take you.

July or August is best for me too.
I figured that the Islands would be best for most folks.
The problem is that every weekend usually has an activity already. Maybe I could call one of the private marinas and set something up if there is a "slower" weekend.
I have made Toledo from Put In Bay in 40 minutes at 45mph.
Lake Erie usually behaves pretty well in August.

Last year there was an event called "thunder on the river" which was basically a chopper, car, and boat show.
It was just the first year... but the entry was 35 bucks, you got a reserved dock downtown for the whole weekend, and you could COME AND GO from the dock.

This was key.

A lot of LEOPA boats were there. Cigs and Fountains and Formulas.

Maybe they are doing it again.

Just a thought.

I agree that the Islands would be easiest for the largest majority of folks.

About 600 miles if you travel north of Lake Ontario through Toronto and then through Detroit.

Maybe less if you cross over to the US in NY, say... and then come under Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

As far as I can tell.... the graphics.

I run the same waters as glassdave. I have compared his 260Scorpion to my 260Stinger. His is an 85 mine is an 87.

The differences are just things that you would expect to change from year to year anyway.

I have a rounded windshield more like a fairing.
Dave has a more traditional windshield.

Most stuff is very similar.

There was a Stinger/Scorpion thread over on SW.

Several people over there (actually... I think that there are more Stinger owners on the other site...) are into the idea as well.

All together, there seems to be more than 10 Lake Erie Stingers/Scorpions on the two forums that seems interested.

Will be interested to hear what Glassdave thinks.

man i hafta check out this part of the forum more often. im in for stingerfest. when ever where ever :D

Jon the thunder fest was great. i stayed all weekend. brought the race boat and the Stinger. cant wait for this years. by the way i am at riverview this year. should have the boat in pretty soon. hows your boat doing? i hear they started doing some work at LP on some sort of a club house an pool

fund razor 05-02-2005 12:08 PM

Re: Own a Stinger or a Scorpion? Stingerfest 2005.

Hi Dave,

I am going back to LP. (Not for the clubhouse or whatever....)

I am living down near Maumee this year, instead of the "west end."
This adds about 15 minutes each way to the boat, so I went with LP so that I don't have to do the 15 minute crawl out the Ottawa, (each way) too.

But man.... $1,225 for a slip for three months kind of sucks.

But it also is a really easy dock to get into and out of by myself with that blind spot for a swim platform. :D
I took the boat out solo last year more than with people.
Nice to have a slip I can get in and out of really easy without chewing stuff up.
So I will be at the same place at LP that I was last year.
(near Tizbad)
I went to Thunder on the River two out of the three days in 2004.
I would go back. The best part is that you could come and go.

On my boat... I am doing exhaust manifold gaskets and some hoses but nothing big this year. The last four years I have tackled big projects (engine swaps, cams, manifolds,) on one or the other of the boats.
This year I am trying not to get crazy.
But I would like fresh power.
Maybe 2006.

This year I am going for an earlier splash.
Maybe in a week or ten days.
Even though I don't PLAN a bunch of work, it IS a boat.... so we'll see if the boat is as ready to get wet as I am.
I have already serviced the drives and done the engine oil.
There is always a list.... but with any luck my list will be short this spring.

I will have to raft off of Dave this year so I can get a side by side view. :D
Maybe my deck is higher.

Re: Own a Stinger or a Scorpion? Stingerfest 2005.

Hey Dreamin... depending on where we do this.... there may not be any unprotected water between the ramp and the dock.
I see that you are in Ohio, and Ohio waters of Lake Erie are looking pretty good for an attempt at this.
Actually it would be cool for all sizes to be represented. My guess is that your boat trailers and launches really easy. Maybe you can drive up and splash it near where we end up?

Re: Own a Stinger or a Scorpion? Stingerfest 2005.

At the moment... I am thinking about doing this as part of the "Thunder On The River" event. The theory is that the price would be cheap... and all of the extra features of a larger event would be in place. Nothing extra to do except get them to dock the CCs all in a row.

Several of us took part last year. They had a boat show, a car show, and a bike show. There were a lot of vendors. For one weekend, Mexico was NOT the capital of leather product sales. :D

We paid 35 bucks for a floating slip downtown behind the festival stage. We could come and go (but keep the dock) Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
(Not sure if the price went up.) The money went to Make a Wish, which isn't MY charity... but it is a good one.
There were other boats, some nice Formulas and Fountains and Cigs. But we could have them put all of the CCs together.

This would create other opportunities to see things, entertainment, food vendors. It would also be a decent starting point for any side trips to Kelleys or Put In Bay.

The dates for this year are July 21 and 22.

Last year they had a bikini contest too.

Hello R and B.

It's in downtown Toledo.

But I didn't pull the trigger on an entry yet.
Last year I took my boat down there. So did Packinair and Glassdave.

Not sure. Kind of holding off.

I was hoping for a more central spot.
But with that comes docking issues.

The attraction to this thunder by the river thing was existing infrastructure (vendors, food, bands, bikini contest) and the fact that you can come and go from your designated slip to go for rides or side trips.

We are kicking around the idea of doing it right in downtown Toledo. (And connecting it to this existing event.)

If we do... the Toledo guys would be able to help get the docks, get boats launched, etc.
We have access to some hoists and some ramps. There is a ramp right across the river from the event.

Toledo is a 30-40 minute go fast ride to/from Put In Bay and Kelleys, and a 15 minute ride from Maumee Bay State Park.
(Weather permitting.)

Ok, sounds good, i'm still not sure if I'll be able to make it depending on location. I'm not sure about the ol' 168 in rough water--it didn't do bad in the main lake at Lake Cumberland but that probably doesn't compare to Erie or someplace bigger.

If the location is the Maumee, you could drop the boat in across the river and you would be in protected waters.

I wouldn't take a 16 to the Islands from Toledo tho....
