Thanks Jim, still needs some TLC. Planning to make it down to the coast at least once this year, hopefully we can hook up for a beer somewhere...

Re: 28SS's
Sounds good John! Let me know...
Also, we'll be on Travis in July for our annual houseboat trip. You'll have to come out for a beer. :drink: And bring the keys to that Cig, maybe we'll work out a trade! :D :D Jim |

Re: 28SS's
How much weight am I dealing with in a 28? For trailering? Looking for twin I/O's - that one with twin egg-beaters looks pretty rough.
Yes, I'm still shopping.... |

I own this one. New power and new Stainless Marine exhaust this winter. New guages and lots of other hardware in progress.
|
Re: 28SS's
Bouy, to get my trailer registered I had to get my 28 weighed. With twin small blocks/TRS, tanks near empty, axles on the scale, tongue on the truck (not on the scale) it was 8100lbs. Add 10% for the tongue and you're looking at 9k and change.
I pull it with a supercharged 1998 Chevy C1500 with 3.73 gears. Truck pulls it just fine, but the brakes really suck. I'm real careful in traffic, leave about 9000 feet between me and anything in front of me. |

That's a nice 28. Looks to be in original condition too with the exception of the hatch? That boat is in the book, "Muscle Boats" Sean |

Yes, I'm still shopping.... 1st pic is Excursion only = 7,640 Lbs 2nd pic is Excursion + Trailer = 8,800 Lbs 3rd pic is car/trailer/Cig = 15,100 Lbs Tandem axle Loadmast trailer is just under 1,200 Lbs. Cig is 6,300 Lbs on this day. Very light (less than 1/4 tank) fuel and cooler is empty. So you could be adding another 90+ gallons (540 Lbs) and 4 cases of your favorite beverage, food and ice on top of this and I'm over 7,000 Lbs without even stepping on the boat. The important point to note here is mine is converted to a single BBC, so take that conservative 6,300 Lbs and add another engine & drive and your probably very safe guessing at least 8,000 Lbs for the boat alone. For insurance reasons, you really should not be towing one of these with anything less than a 3/4 ton. |

Thanks for the info.
Again, every boat I'm interested in requires me to upgrade in tow vehicle first... |

Re: 28SS's
bouyhunter: what kinda boat are ya looking for? i know its not a whole lot like a 28 cig, but in the oso classifieds there is a 79 pantera 24 (could most likely be trailered wit ur current vehicle) and the entire boat is like brand new (custom paint, fiberglass fairing, interior at pantera, dash, new 454, turnkey setup) asking 22 grand in tennessee. its not my boat, just its been in there awhile and looks like an awesome boat imo. :drink:

jr mike Considering the weight of the boats I'm looking at, I might as well be driving a 1980 Renault "Le' Car", 4-speed, inline 1.4l. Actually, I'm running a 96' C1500 - it's been a great truck and only has 54K on it (I bought it 2 years ago with low miles, and I only live 2 miles from work..) - but max tow is 6500lbs. When it comes to these old boats that over 25', that just isn't gonna cut it. I never should have gotten rid of my 2000 K3500 - but had a career change, and no boat at the time, so it was somewhat overkill. |

I was hoping to get into the 28ish range with twins - but I'll take a look at that Pantera. Thanks for the heads-up. |

Bouyhunter,
I towed my boat about 500 miles when I picked it up with a '95 k1500 Chevy and it did just fine. The truck also had like 175000 miles on it at the time. The ramp is only like a mile from my house though, and I have a new truck, ...but, if you have a good local ramp, don't worry about it. Sean, The hatch is stock but re-upholstered, it was red in Muscle Boats, and I removed the sun pad. It was raised 4 inches to clear the exhaust and carb. I'm building new race hatches now. I fitted them up today and it makes it look like a totally different boat. I'll take some pictures of it later this week in anyone wants to see it. In the meantime, heres a couple pics of what the old exhaust looks like and what the new stuff will look like. |

old style is too big to attach, look at the other picture
Heres one of it running. If I was more computer literate I'd post the video. It sounds good with dry pipes! |
Re: 28SS's
In post 26 you can see why I'm building a new hatch. The sides weren't even fiberglassed, it was just upholstered wood. It must be good wood though. over 20 years and no rot.
|
Re: 28SS's
Dangerous Dave
Who is building your hatch? I could use a raised hatch to clear to manifolds. I'm very curious of this. Big Andy |
Re: 28SS's
I'm building it. I'm a master at carpentry and fiberglass work. I'll post some pics soon. It's a little like the a Tiger hatch mixed with a Scarab 38KV
|
Re: 28SS's
Could you build two? I don't think my hatch is the same as yours, though. Mine, there is a space between where the hatch ends and the back seat begins. The space is like 8 inches. Its the only 28 that I have seen this way.
I just need a hatch that is raised about 4 inches. That's all. |
Re: 28SS's
I have that same space between the back seat and the hatch. I almost cut it out and extended the hatch but I didn't want to hack it up. If I had more time I'd build you one but I barely have time to work on my own boat.
What year is your boat? Any Pics? |

Re: 28SS's
Its an 86 with T-454's and TRS's. Not sure if the 454's are stock or not.
Sorry about the zip file. |
Re: 28SS's
BattleCry your boat is AWESOME!
I thought mine was the only one with no deck hatches. It must be real tight in that engine compartment with big blocks. |
Re: 28SS's
It looks like the recent tornados here in Springfield IL are going to buy a new set of injected small blocks. The big blocks are coming out.
|
Re: 28SS's
I read on another thread that the small block boats ride better than the big block boats. What kind of speeds are you seeing with the big blocks? Do you have any details on the injected small blocks?
|

Heres some pictures of my new hatch(s) I was just fitting one up before fiberglass and figured I'd show you guys what it looks like. They are "race hatches" so they will open to each side. Also theres a pic of the 10 inch area of fiberglass between the seat and hatch so we all know were talking about
