How many 28 SS's were built? Mine is a 1973 and I am trying to figure out what # I am.

wehad one like 12 yrs ago i also think ours was a 73 but not 100% sure. sure miss that boat a lot....... and it love the rough water

Mine is a 1980 28 SS.
Twin small blocks & dual fuel tanks.

I had a 73 OS. Sold it and it went to TX. Now I'm looking at a 74 OS in Miami!

Most of the paperwork at Cigarette when the 28 was in production has been lost. I tried getting some info on my old one a LONG time ago. They basically said everything was typed or written back then (IE: No computers). With all of the changes in ownership and management throughout the years, you're probably out of luck on finding much solid info on how many there are. :(

Bud looked for information on mine. Everything (in terms of records) from the early 80's and older are gone or lucky to come by it seems.

For what it's worth, I have a 73 28 Open, and I have heard a few times, from different sources, that there were approximatley 85 of them made. I would think that there would maybe no more than double the 28 SS' made, so that might put the final production number of the 28's around 250 -MAX. Sound about right?

BLee is correct. When Scott and Craig looked up the info on my old 28 back in 1995 they came up empty and it was a 1978. Most of the old 20,24 and 28 info was in Don's old office. Who knows what happened to it. Too bad....

If theres 200 or so, where are they all? In the last five or six years I would guess theres been about 30 or 40 different ones for sale, maybe less. If they built them for 13 years ('73-'86) that would be about 15 per year. I own an '85 and know of only one other '85 (Thrillseekers) and one '86. Anyone see any others around your area? I think I own the only one in the Tampa Bay area. Heres a pic.

When i was redoing my 28SS, i created thunderboatalley.com and collected hundreds of photos from the internet so i could refer back to them while i was working on mine. I never really counted how many boats I had pictures of, but judging by my work back then and the realization that there are ALOT more out there that have not reached the internet, i'm guess ing 200 is a reasonable number. I still see some popping up here and ther on LI...in just the past month, I've seen 2 new 28s in back yards that I never new existed...I can think of at least 6 that I've seen on the water on LI that have never seen the internet...

as far as the mid-late 80s is concerned, Cigarette did not build many 28s...The majority were built in the 70s...

Sounds like LI has a bunch of them. Your restoration was incredible. It also had my favorite paintjob. Did you notice a big difference with the bravos and change of center if gravity? I'm doing lots of restoration/updating to mine now and eventually bravos might be in the picture. I think Konrads would be too heavy.
Just so you classic lovers know, one thing I will never do is change the paintjob on mine.

Heres another picture.
This picture was taken before any work was done.
Updates include new Stainlessmarine exhaust (so the tips don't stick out so far) New stainless steel dash panels with Auto-Meter Pro Comp guages, Lots of new stuff for the motors but I still might build a couple better ones, custom built race hatches, lots of paint on the hardware and every electrical wire and throttle/shift/indicator cable replaced and many other things.

mine was/is still all white as far as i know...not sure if you are being serious or have my old boat confused with another 28... personally, i like all white with some accents in the upholstery like i did mine... my 20 is going to stay original...red hull, white deck and i'm going to do a white interior with a few accents.

your boat is looking great, glad to hear you are keeping it original...and you have the book it is in right?

as far as bravos on the 28, i dont have a frame of reference...i bought the boat completely stripped for $1200 in 98 :) everyone thought i was crazy!

I think Ted added tabs to mine after he bought it and apparently handling was improved. for what it's worth, i was able to get the boat on plane with one motor(ran them out of fuel on one tank, switched over to the other and couldn get the port motor started). i also feel it handled well without the tabs, but agree that tabs would benefit the boat in a crosswind and in rough water...

that boat still is and will always be my favorite...it was just a great all-around boat...good in rough water, easily trailerable and very manuverable...

I was serious about the paint on yours. I love an all white boat, it really helps you appriciate the lines of the boat.

I have not had a gps on it but was told by the previous owner a friend of mine that it does 74 on gps. it come out of the water real nice. of course this is when my merctrans transmissions are not giving me problems. The engines need to come out again becauce the transmissions were not rebuilt properly. shoehorn was the term that I used. the whole front of the engine has to come off from the heat exchanche to the crank pulley

The deck is only there to stand on and spill beer on. Besides some idiot glued a carpet to it at one point and there is glue all over it. I am in the process of making a new snap in cockpit carpet. I will take proper photos one it goes in the water again that was just out behind my shop.

Stageharbor: Shoehorn is the term I would use too! We're right down the coast from you in Kittery Point. There is also a huge Cigarette fan in another Maineiac who goes by "Biggus" here on OSO on Long Lake.

Heres one i restored for a friend back in 02' its a 1976 bicentennial edition....had the red/white/and blue theme all over it....and had a racing tripple bolster front seats in it....by the way...the 3 man bolster is going back in the boat this year....and a nice set of built 383's are in the works for her as well....should be an interestng boat when all done....as it sat she had a set of built 350's @400hp each and hit a best of 68mph on lake MI...has hit 70 in the ocean before. :cool:

The boat was painted all white...local guys here that do great auto paint work....they had to extend their booth 10' with plastic sheets to fit the entire boat and trailer......the rest of everything you see is all sticker work!!! Sticker Dude here in northern IL did all the graphics for it...turned out sweet.....only thing they want to change still but havent had time to do it was change the Cig logo on the deck so it looks more uniform.
