Is there a strengthening component to the rail? Are the decks without rails built stronger(heavier)?

There is no Strengthening component to the deck rail. Just asthetics and a little functionalbility (sp?).

I have a full length cover for the boat and like that the deck rail keeps a little gap from the cover and my paint job on top. Also good for the rain to drain off.
