Owned both. 42X is hands down winner. 39 700 package is great runs 100 mph. Problem with the 39 is you can’t get the QC4 engines in a full stagger. 42X is deeper much better ride and you can get a full 20” stagger. It also handles the big power with 8 drives nicely. Our 39 was a 2011 w/700’s and our 42X is a 2015 w/1100’s. Both are great boats. |

You have to respect 39 Unlimited's experience with both hulls. With the 39 the balance and engine stagger observations are not a deal breaker in my humble opinion. I have two good friends with 39's. First is the notorious "Pink B-tch" which runs around 110 - 112 with 850's and 6 drives. The other is a 2017 with 700's and 6 drives which runs around 100 - 102. Phil say's that the 39 is the best hull ever built by Cigarette, I'm certainly not gonna argue. No bad choice here, Good Luck!
Did Pink B!tch not sell yet? Seems to be a lot of boat for the money. |
The 39 with the 700's and NXT's was a great set-up - too bad you can't get a new one any longer. With the whipple upgrades mine ran right around 110 - IMHO there's no need to go any faster in that hull.

Tank, It may go this weekend. A serious buyer is coming in from LOTO to check it out. A lot of strokers and keyboard warriors who want to buy it for 150k, or trade in a car, bike, Asian concubine etc.

The only boat I would give my 39 700 NXT boat up for would be a 42x with 1100's. Extremely happy with my 2008 39. Has always been my dream boat and its just a hammer in rough water. Love it.

Nope on the 860's

motors are full stagger in both. 39’s with 6’s use a nxt tranny and transom assembly |

Are you sure? The 850 and 1075 boats are half stagger to my knowledge. And if they use the NXT tranny behind a 850 or 1075 I wouldn’t trust that for a second. |

i know that, I owned a 700/NXT boat. That is why I’m saying the 700/NXT 39’s are full stagger but the 850/1075 #6 39’s cannot fit a full stagger and are therefor built as short stagger boats. |

Won’t Fit!

They will not fit in the boat. Needs a hatch re-design but my understanding is Skip will not re-design it. Fine with me, only going to drive the 39 $$ amount up on the boats that are 700SCI boats.
|
I spoke with an application engineer at Mercury and he doesn't understand why 860's wouldn't accommodate a full stagger, he did however acknowledge that the 860's are taller and that the hatch might need a redesign.
|
860’s are too wide with the headers is what I was told |
Id have to imagine if somebody wanted one with 860's bad enough they could do it, just not in a full stagger, like the 2 39's they made with 1100's.
|
Our 1100 boat had a short stagger as well. We also had m8's so the motors could be mounted just a bit lower than a 6 drive setup. The hatch did need a redesign, we were the first boat with the slotted intakes on either side of the hatch. Hatch was slightly (inches) taller than the standard top, but nothing close to the 850/1075 hatches I've seen. The motors were pushed as far forward as cigarette would allow, to the point where they did not want to move the rear seats forward any further. That said, there was still a good amount of room in front of the forward motor, I certainly squeezed in there a few times.
Despite the change in the center of gravity as alluded to in this thread, the boat handled like a rocket ship on rails. Honestly felt more solid and stable at speed than our prior 700/NXT boat -- although I'm sure that certainly had something to do with the bigger drives! I guess the point is, yes the center of gravity changes with the boats, but I have full confidence in cigarette, they know what they're doing, and all design changes were communicated with us clearly! I do think Cigarette now has a problem with the power packages from mercury. The 700 package was such a perfect option for the 39 with the full stagger, and its disappointing to see that the only option they have now is the 565. I haven't heard of them building any 860 boats yet, and in my mind, at that power level, its just another reason to go 42x to get that full stagger. |
Just a side thought, the 39 is listed as 38'9". Imagine another 8-12 inches in hull length, that would probably be just enough to squeeze a full stagger in there.

Holy crap, what a deal. If I had mine gone this would be an easy choice....
