39 Top Gun or 42 X
I am looking to trade up to a 39 Top Gun or 42 X with 700's. Is their anyone that has either of these boats and can shed any light on the differences between the two boats. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks TJ

3 feet.........
:drink::evilb::ernaehrung004::throw: Seriously, both are staggered set ups, both will KILL big water, I think the 39 would be a little faster with the same engines. I am not sure if there is a difference besides the 3 feet. |

I think it was posted somewhere about the cabin height of the 42X being pretty low/short in comparison if that helps ?!?
Can't go wrong with either, but the "investment" is probably wiser on the 39 and there is a low hour beauty in the classifieds in the low 400's just wating for a new owner  |
cockpits both about same size, 42x's is deeper though. a little extra room in engine compartment and bow is where the extra 3 feet goes. there is some difference in bottom design. there is a very small 1" step aft of the 2nd larger step. supposed to provide a little more stern lift, ease of planning etc.. father has a 42x with 700's and been in a 39 before with 700's. 42x tops out at 98 for us. 39 does like 107-108 or so. 39 feels more agile and not really much smaller so if you really need the extra boat for the seas you boat in i'd say stick with the 39. both are sweet obviously.

I talked to a guy who worked for Cigarette up till May of last year, and he stated that the 42 hull is one of the worst hulls they make. (something with the steps and the center of gravity, and bad efficiency) might want to investigate a little.

Both are very nice rides. I would go with the 39 TG for a couple reasons. I think the 39 will be easier to sell and with the base 700/NXT package will run 100+ with what ever you put it in for a load, or if you opt for a bravo boat w/600's it will still run in the low to mid 90's. The 39 is very stable at speed and handles incredible. I personally would not do a 39TG with #6's in it because I have heard that they do not handle as well with the extra weight in the stern.

I am not sure the exact #'s but there is a weight difference and a CG difference between the #6 39TG and the NXT 39TG. The 39TG with the NXT is a better balanced boat. The 850/1075 engines are heavier with (2) lyshom SC's compared to (1) on the 700. The # 6 drives are heavier than the NXT's. The 700 boats also have a full stagger as compared to the #6 style 39TG's which are staggered but not a full stagger. I think the 39TG's with the big merc power and #6's are very nice rides. I am just expressing my opinion that I think a 39TG with the 700/NXT package is one of the best all around boats, 100+mph, Great handling, and Great Rough water capability. DK |

I've been in one as well. 39 w/850sci's & 6's. The boat rode perfect at every speed and handled Government Cut on Boat Show weekend like a champ. No porpose what so ever and insane acceleration. Oh and the 42 that had issues with weight balance was the Tiger T/S w/6's....not the 42-X. Sorry that's only first hand info, best I could do. |

TJ,
I am taking delivery of a 39 with 700's in two weeks, it will be the new OSO boat. It is a Dealer Demo and I would be happy to give you a ride if you are around South Florida any time soon. |

Tell everyone one EDock I said hello. |
I did my research and found out that the 850,s as well as the 1075,s work very nicely in the 39. The Mercury boat is currently running 1075,s as we speak.

Oh and the 42 that had issues with weight balance was the Tiger T/S w/6's....not the 42-X. Like Brandon said, when the first stepped 42's were built they ran great with bravos. When they put the sixes in 'em and pushed the motors forward due to the trannies it f*cked the CG up royally. Thus the birth of the 42X. the 42X changed the steps around to accept the new CG with big power/trannies/sixes. Its commonly mistakenly quoted that the "stepped 42" rides like crap. It was only in the above listed circs. The 42x is an AWESOME machine. And the stepped 42 with bravos is also a great running boat. Tanner, if you go and confirm this with the gentlemen you spoke with I'm sure he'd agree.;) |
Hi Folks - Let us step ahead nearly 11 years. Please bring your current thoughts, opinions and experiences to the table, between the 39 and 42x with 700s. I have yet to ride in either but I believe one of the two will be my next choice. Thanks.
