New Mistress Owner

OK I am a first-timer so here goes:
I bought my wife what I always wanted for her upcoming 40th Birthday - a 1985 Cigarette Mistress!!! The plan is to for her to unwrap some Cig clothes and towels (Feb 23) as a buddy tows the boat up to the house...we will see how it goes but my 2 boys (8 and 9) are hip to the suprise and very excited.

Anyhow, we do our boating in the 1000 Islands and I have been watching the Poker runs for years and decided to step up with our 6th boat, but first performance boat. Our 22' 1977 Donzi Classic "Miss Behave" was becoming crowded what with 4 kids, wife, (hot) nanny, caretaker etc.

A good buddy who recently had twin 900hp Apaches dropped in his 35' 1978 Sonic by his mechanic told me that his mechanic needed to part ways with his Mistress for financial reasons and that the boat was beautiful etc. After going for a ride in his sonic (and losing my hearing and sight temporarily) I decided his mechanic knew his biz and would take a peek at this mystery Mistress. Inside my head, I was hoping the colors would be horrible and it would need a ton of work so I could have an excuse to pass.

Long story longer, I went to see the boat a few days before Xmas and was floored by the colors and condition: 35' Cig on Myco Dual trailer, Mayfair steering, fresh T.R.S drives with nose cones, new cockpit interior, new throttles, engines- 522CID 575 hp (9 hours), 4.00 stroke 4.600 bore, new exhaust manifolds, new intake manifolds, new starters, new water crossovers, H.D engine oil coolers...all for $35K!!!

We (the mechanic and I) plan on testing props for correct fresh water performance in early spring. For the time being, I am dropping a new '08 Alpine ida-X100M marine audio system in with appropriate speakers and a sub and a '20 inch plasma with a playstation 3 w dvd in cabin and a Garmin 3210 on dash.

I have contacted Cigarette in an attempt to get the original built sheet and order fresh cig logo stickers but have not heard back after phone and email messages. Apparently, their apparel department is a bit more responsive. Anybody have any contacts at cig racing that could help me? (The wish list has the '49 grand sport cruiser at the very top unless somebody can tell me I am crazy.)

I tend to lean heavily toward classics and feel good about this Mistress. The cabin is fine but will need an update at some point (like when the kids grow up) and the hatch cushions are fine but could use some freshening. Anybody have a qualified resource for cabin or cushion upholstery in 1000 Islands region or Jersey shore?

Also, any thoughts on muffler systems?

Finally, I am considering the June Alex Bay poker run with my sonic buddy (mid-90mph) and a fountain buddy (mid-80mph) and was wondering if it made sense for all of us to go in separate boats or to divide and conquer so to speak. This Mistress is set up for torque so high end is 70-71mph (I am told). Any and all thoughts are appeciated.

Did I do OK?

Do any fellow Cig owners have any interest in hooking up at my pad on Grindstone Island between the poker runs in June or August?

Thanks and apoloigies for this lengthy message

I will mess with pics and see if I can post any.

I am seriously pumped and counting the days till summer...

Sweet looking boat. I, of course, am very partial to the classics. Love the looks and colors of your....uh.....the wife's new toy.

If the engines were dynoed, and you do have 575hp (which sounds reasonable with 522 inch motors), I think you've got a few more mph in her. You might see 74-75.

Good luck with the set-up and props.

MrCIG 01-30-2008 08:17 PM

Congrats on the new ride. looks real Clean you are going to love it.

J-Bonz 01-30-2008 08:18 PM

Love it............... It is a sweet ride

ciaoderhead 01-30-2008 08:22 PM

Congrats, your wife is in for a nice surprise. I bought my GF a 1957 15' Glaspar for her 40th. You'd think she hit the lottery. I better not let her see this. Now I don't have to ferry her back and forth to the beach. :cool-smiley-011:

I was thinking the same thing. Make sure you get the right TYPE prop and not just the right pitch due to the length of the TRS drive.

He is going to love that boat.

Lucky, Lucky, Lucky

Nice bootdaddy  Where about in NJ? Me and Dean(XtremeAir) run our Mistresses, uh I mean the wife's Mistresses, in New Jersey too. That makes 3 now! I'm in Lanoka Harbor and he is down in Ocean City / Somers Point area. We meet at Trumps in AC couple few times a season.

Love your new rig ... mine is '85 too w/#3s. I get 75.7 on GPS with @620hp blower motors. Installing Stellings exhaust as we speak and did new carbs last year ... gotta RE-GPS now!

I take my mistress to the 1000 islands. You should think about the Seneca lake poker run in June. Its in upstate NY. Can't wait to see the pictures. Good Luck. You will love the ride. Looks like you stole it to. I have 675Hp and Konrads. Boat runs 77-78 GPS

bootdaddy 01-31-2008 07:44 AM

Thanks for the input and awesome cig pics!

Chris - I live in Bedminster NJ and grew up in Rochester spending EVERY summer boating in the 1000 Islands so I am very partial to freshwater. My sonic bud does his boating down the shore so maybe we can hook up and take Trump for a few bucks!

I love the looks and increased performance of blower juice etc. but I am leaning heavily toward reliability and less wear and tear out of the gate with this baby. I tend to use my boats often (like daily) in season and want to have fun "as is" while I decide if I want the extra juice. My pals have some nasty speed that I can helm when I feel the need to scratch my corneas.

I will check into the Seneca Lake Poker Run but plan on being in the 1000 Islands for the 3rd week of June's A-Bay Poker Run and ALL of August including Kingston run. I have 80 acres on Grindstone Island and a deep water protected bay that would look great stacked up with cigs!

Mufflers??? What do the Cig owners think is the best option - Livorsi, Gaffrig? Others? Full-time, Choice? Advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

Smart move. Get used to the boat in it's current configuration and save some coin for the fuel dock!!! You'll have plenty of time to make changes and install "power adders" in the future.

Someone put it this way once before; "Probably the largest part of buying a Cigarette is the pride of ownership."

Congrats on the new baby!!

Biggus 01-31-2008 08:57 AM

Sweet Mistress, sounds like a real bargain too!

Enjoy!

Xtreme Air 01-31-2008 03:26 PM

Great looking Mistress. Welcome to the wave crushing clan!

Tom A. 02-01-2008 01:26 PM

Congrats, Awesome Cig, can't wait to see it run.
I am running around Barnegat Bay and down to A/C all the time. We should do an informal OSO get together @ Trump sometime this summer. If not then then I will see you in Kingston for the 1000 Ils. run.

Thanks Tom A - would love to hook up maybe spring as summer is sooo long away - especially with this flippin' jersey weather!

How do you like your zr? I looked at them in the 1000 Islands and they are sweet, but could not justify the dough for 6th boat so I opted for the Mistress!

As you can see by my Donzi below - I do have a soft spot for the classics!!! I just love the soft bow on this...

SKRAMER 02-01-2008 01:49 PM

Congrats on the new wave crusher!!!!!!!!!

Harvey 02-05-2008 09:01 AM

Mistress

Congrats on the Mistress. You will enjoy it, great ride. I/ve owned mine for five years. Can't beat the classic lines. Bring it down to the Norfolk Va Poker runs this summer and I'll bring my up for the run also. I'ts a great run. It's HRPA run in August.

bootdaddy 02-07-2008 10:04 AM

The jig is up...my wife found out about her 40th b-day "boat" surprise after listening to a message from the insurance agent's secretary about the "new boat":hitfan:

Insurance agent called up begging for forgiveness etc. as he was in on the surprise...

The good news is that I just saved a bunch of money on my boat insurance! sad LOL

That just sucks, my 8 and 9 yr old boys have been keeping the secret for 6 weeks (good training for boys to keep secrets from women!) and I bough a bunch of cig sh!t for her to unwrap as I was going to have the boat towed up in front of 50 people at her party.

She says to play it out as she has not seen it and does not know what kind of boat it is and to make it enjoyable for the boys...

She also says that all that matters is that I love her and the boat doesn't mean anything...for the love of God I may never understand women!

Top Ven 02-07-2008 01:41 PM

Top Ven - this Mistress is heading to "retirement" in the freshwater of the St. Lawrence River - 1000 Islands

Motown Jim - thanks and I love the lines and clean look of your Mistress. All original yes? sweeet...

Cig Rocket - went through your positing archives and loved 'em...some dedicated cig boat wife you have too!!!! I felt relieved when I read that you were 6 6' cause you tower that boat!

here are some logo and vent pics...I am told that the vents were originally all black...and I am thinking of keeping the stern ones black and the other 3 grey to keep the look clean against vinyl and gunnels...thoughts? ghemi - some fashion tips here?

I was thinking of redoing the logos, but part of me loves the way these puppies have faded in...thoughts?

IMHO ... I like the brushed aluminum vents and go with new logos! They're easy, cheap, and look great.

Enjoy ... spring is a comin!!

motownjim 02-13-2008 03:38 PM

whatever you do with the hatches find a way to put a nice cushion back there so you and moma can layout and sunbath when you anchor.you wont regret it.
