The best car / truck to tow a Top Gun

Wich is the best car - truck to tow a Top Gun ??

A Range Rover can do it ??

Thanks

Biggus 03-26-2008 06:17 AM

The Range Rover will not be up to the task. I prefer atleast an F-350 Ford or larger.

SKRAMER 03-26-2008 06:25 AM

I have a ford 350 dulley. Pulls a topgun no problem!!!

Chris Sunkin 03-26-2008 06:59 AM

Not only is a Range Rover not enough, it's about only half enough. A fully loaded gun (fuel, junk, trailer) is some serious weight.

seafordguy 03-26-2008 07:12 AM

Having pulled my Cafe Racer for a summer I can honestly say that in my opinion you would be nuts to be in anything less than an F350, Chevy 3500, or Dodge 3500 DUALLY.

Ummm....no.

That boat/trailer combo has to be over 14,000 lbs. A 3/4 ton pickup is rated less than that but will do the job OK. No 1/2 ton vehicle/sport utility is going to STOP that load very well. (I don't really care how long it takes to get the load moving forward, stopping is what's important). A range Rover has to be rated well under 10,000 lbs and would be unsafe at any speed outside of a parking lot.

Bottom line is a 3/4 ton truck is no better than pulling with the Range Rover if/when something goes wrong.:hitfan:

If the vehicle isn't rated to tow the weight your insurance company will DENY the claim and you leave yourself wide open to a serious law suit. Buy the correct tow vehicle for the job and avoid the potential litigation and make your towing much easier. Like I've said before, since we got our dually, my wife has no problems hopping behind the wheel when towing.

I would disagree. I got hit towing a Topgun and ended up losing control and rolling. I moved to a Freightliner and just last year got smacked towing a 40 Excalibur on the interstate. I destroyed the side of the truck that changed lanes into me and the FL barely even moved. It also sustained less than $100 in damage.

Obviously the FL is WAY bigger but an F350 is WAY bigger than the Rover. Don't discount mass and stability. Or comfort- My white-knuckle experiences have disappeared since moving to the big truck.

I laugh when I see people jacking up their trucks and then wanting to tow max capacity with them. Stability will bail your ass out of a jam, why give it away?

I agree Chris but my point was if you are going to tow with an underrated vehicle it doesn't matter if you are 100 pounds overloaded or 1000 pounds overloaded. Your insurance company is going to disown you if there is a claim. My comment equating the Range Rover and 3/4 PU was somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Mickeyboy is in Italy.......Ins and "legal" issues are certainly different over there. I'm also assuming he's looking to haul the thing out a couple times a year, not run around the country trying to hit a different event every weekend.

Maybe hiding the boat from his wife while he's hooking up with all his female employees!:drink:

Mooving a 38' in Italy costs a LOT !! Ex . for approx 250KMS I pay $ 1600 !

Now that part I'll buy!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D

I realize he is in Italy. I'm just a firm believer in getting the right tool for the job. Loaded up with similar options there is virtually no difference in price from a 4X4 250 to a 2WD 350. Why not get the truck that is rated to tow the weight? I've towed boats with too small a truck. Now that I think back...

MickeyBoy 03-26-2008 10:00 AM

That's the best dealer in Italy for that kind of cars .

http://www.bondesan.com

look under NUOVO and PICK UP ...and suggest me on the offer he has available ..

Dodge Ram 2.500 e 3.500
Dodge New Ram 1500
Dodge SRT-10
Dodge Dakota
Ford F250/F350 Super Duty
Ford F150
Ford Explorer Sport Trac
Chevrolet Avalanche
Chevrolet C/K 2.5/3.5 Silverado
Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado
Chevrolet Colorado
Cadillac Escalade EXT
Lincoln Mark LT

And what about Lincoln Navigator ??

Son of a Gun 03-26-2008 10:16 AM

Navigator wouldn't suffice either. Stick with at least a Ford F-250, preferably an F-350 or a Dodge 2500 or preferably 3500. Same with the Chevrolet 2500/3500.

I will admit that I have hauled a Gun around with my Ram 1500 2wd, I prefer to do it with our Dually but sometimes I gotta do what I gotta do. I just wouldn't stretch going very far and I pretty careful at that. You can never tell what the clown next to you is going to do though. I'm going to try and look for a used med. duty truck when my 38 Fever is done. The gun isn't mine and we have gotten a F350 since that pick was taken

Son of a Gun 03-26-2008 12:17 PM

We had to pull ours with our 2004 Hemi Ram. Wasn't fun.

Tom A. 03-26-2008 12:46 PM

What about the Mercedes/freightliner/dodge Sprinter. They are all over Europe and have 3500 series with dual rear wheels. Those should be fairly readily available.

dmaxx3500 03-26-2008 12:46 PM

chevy 3500 crew cab daully powered by a duramax/allison combo,''rides like a caddy pulls like a freight train''

BDiggity 03-26-2008 01:28 PM

Since you are in Europe, doesnt MB or Volvo have some of those larger trucks you could buy? Or is it still cheaper to import a US truck?

Yukon will not do it either. Towinf capacity is only 7900lbs and you are WAY over that. Any SUV is out if you want to tow it safely and within the specs of the tow vehicle.

So, 1/4 mile times would be the same w/ or w/o pulling the boat? AWESOME!! :D

No need to spend crazy $$$ either. Here's my 'ol Ford (Tank's favorite tow vehicle) Been working like a champ since 1997! And a hell of a lot more reliable then my Duramax. :party-smiley-004:

I'm in the same position right now, too. Need to find a tow vehicle for my Cig and i just can't decide what to go with. I've always owned Chevys or GMC's and have been looking at Duramax diesels....2500 and 3500HD's, crew cabs etc....Just can't decide and I only want to spend about 25k. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated. I've read most of the Ford vs Chevy threads and there seems to be mixied opinions of both....tough decision but I really like the interior of the GM vehicles a lot better.

I have towed my Playboy with both Chevy and Fords and i can tell you that they both did fine. I havent had a single issue with my 05 Ford f350 but i know of a couple people that have, but the same goes for the Chevys. The 08 F450 has had a few minor issues
I also like the interior of the Chevy better but the Ford has more room and rides better ( Fabtech lift and 37" tires helped a lot)

I think the Chevy has more power and got better mileage

If you are only going to tow it a few times, find a guy with a nice truck and give him a few bucks to tow it for you. With gas prices that high I wouldn't want any truck you have listed there, even if its not your daily driver.
