Info on a 1989 Cafe Racer

3 Attachment(s)
OK I posted earlier but OSO wouldn't let me make the changes.

Anyway Have a 1989 Cafe Racer on our lot, owner is looking to move. It has Bravo one with ext box and speed master lowers. Has 572's, very sweet boat. I am not as familiar with the Cigs so I welcome any opinions on this model. I took it out in solid 3' waves and the boat was unreal solid, and fast. Here are some pics, I appreciate any opinions on this model and set up.

Sincerely

WILL

Will,

I don't think anyone can ever say anything negative about a Cig. The only thing I've ever heard is it may not be as fast as a "Brand X" with similar power. But they are as well built as anything ever made and they are all wavecrushers!

Sweet looking boat! I may have to stop by and check it out. However, I'm only a tire kicker :)
That's over my pay grade :)

BTW, who was the brunette on your boat at the OM run? She looked FINE!

BAJA WILL 06-16-2008 02:08 PM

that girl was Johnnys Date she may or may not be around some more. The PR Video got some shots of her and Cindy at SMithfield station.

As for the Cig, I think its going to be priced very aggressively?

SKRAMER 06-16-2008 03:42 PM

Awesome cafe!! If the engine are tight and nothing is broken on her she should bring good money. What is the asking price???

BAJA WILL 06-16-2008 05:11 PM

Actually the price is one of the parts I am trying to be fair about right now. If someone wishes to pm me with an idea of what they feel would be fair I would love to hear it, even if your not interested in purchasing.

Sincerely,

WILL

Jeff you can't compare two 20+ year old boats as being just as nice from pictures alone. If you knew both boats personally or had seen both in person that might be a decent comparison but everyone knows pictures can be deceiving.

I agree 100%.

It's also true though that just because a former owner spent a small fortune on trying to make one of these beasts go fastER, doesn't make it more valuable.

That is most of the dissapointment with owning one of these older nice boats I think. Once you get them the way you want them, you can't sell them.

I was just throwing some stuff out there like he asked.

While shopping for my next rig I have noticed that with the combination of better interest rates, Less maintenance and burning a lot less fuel, that you can buy a much newer top gun, or comparative competitor that runs faster on smaller engines (fuel) for a smaller payment, and they will hold better value, thus killing the market on these older boats.

Just look at how many are on the market that just WON'T sell for some reason.

Just my .02

OldSchool 06-16-2008 06:49 PM

It's probably worth 70-75K.......if you can find a buyer.

They're out there, but very hard to find right now. It's not a good time to sell if you want good $$$$$$ for something.....way too many "must sell bargain boats" out there!!

seafordguy 06-16-2008 07:19 PM

Hours?

That could be a big make or break on this boat...

BillR 06-17-2008 06:25 AM

That is Allan Smith's old boat (asmith on OSO) That boat was in top 100% condition when he sold it. I hear the current owner didn't use it much and thus it sat. Would be a great boat for someone - fast too!

stecz20 06-17-2008 09:55 AM

great paint......

BAJA WILL 06-17-2008 10:43 AM

Thanks for all the input, the boat is what I would consider good condition for a 1989. Those motors are AWSOME, sounds like a rocket.

YOU GUYS ARE HIGH!

Remember my buddy traded an 01 35 T/S Playboy in Feb 2006 (stronger boat market) with 330 hours on stock 500 EFI's and got 90K. Passport Marine owned that boat 18 more months until bankruptcy and never got an offer on Ebay over 105K after a dozen listings.

This boat is worth 50K at best in today's market, its old/ dated graphics/ may/may not need stringer/transom work. Stecz's boat was asking 79K if I recall when he was selling it in a much stronger market and it was a Kevlar boat/ updated.

It will be gone fast for $50 thats for sure. Stecz's cafe!!! how can you compair this one to Stecz? His was worth $105 and he gave it away for $79

Maybe, maybe not. The next person to buy that boat will own it forever, kind of like the rest of us that buy these old boats.

It will make someone happy though and that is what matters.

Do you really think he left 26K on the table? He was asking 79K so it probably sold for a few bucks less. If he was asking 105K he would still own the boat.

How much were these boats new in 1989? 150K maybe? A new 911 was 45K (now they are 85K), a new TG is low 300's so a new Cafe in 89 should have been about 1/2 that. How can you justify asking 105K if the boat 20 years ago was 150K? Your boat is redone so it will pull a few bucks more but this is a pretty original looking boat.

You can ask all the money in the world but what it sells for is what real money is on it. Warpath was asking 135K and sold for less, Hot Duck's 45 was appraised at 200K+ but he couldn't get an offer when it was 150K. This is a pretty ordinary Cafe compared to the same vintage Apaches.

I know you never get back what you put in, and you lose money right away in a new boat. So here is the news flash boats are not a good investment, but I think some guys on here think that boats are worth .50 on the dollar. I am really sick of hearing about it. The housing market is weak to and might get worse before it gets better, so using line of thinking do you want to sell me your house for 40-50% off. The boats that are part of these fire sales are from people who have to sell...they might have no choice(so there unbelievable deals to be had)but to simply say that some boats are worth only $50,000 is crazy. Some of the old non updated all original may go for $50K but then guess what the new owner will start the process of getting the boat to where it needs to be for at least $20k but maybe up $50k then I say you better hurry cause it will not last.

We are on the same page but some boats are ridiculously overpriced hence the 50 cents on the dollar analogy. There is also an asking price and a selling price. Stecz's updated 89 Cafe was sold 2 years ago in a stronger market with an ask of 79K. SO should someone with a less updated boat ask more today? NOT............ Also an 89 is soon to be 20 years old and that boat will eat money like a pit bull tearing into a cub scout!

I was wondering the same thing. I bet someone has PM'd him and made a deal all ready though.

That really looked like the intention he hadfor this thread. Maybe he was trying to lay down a trade?

After speaking with the owner and and researching. We are asking $79,000 that being said, I made it clear to not let reasonable offers slip by. I cannot stress how much he wants to move this boat and get into his next one before the summer is in full force.

Sincerely,

WILL

I think 79k is going to be a hard sell, with several Top guns and another cafe in the classifieds for 60k or less. If he really wants to move it 55-60k should get some interest.Just my .02

Tell him to go ahead and top off the tanks in his old boat. :party-smiley-004:

I can't discuss on an open forum, but lets just say make an offer, I am sure everyone here can understand?:D

The boats at the 60k range are not in this shape or have this power, so do think those boats are only worth 40k? If so a mistress is 25k? I hope anyone willing to take 55-60K for that boat is getting the same smoking deal on the other side.
