Bullet VS Outlaw
Hey guys, A good buddy of mine has a 2007 30ft Baja Outlaw. I recently purchased my 1992 31 Cigarette Bullet. We are in a performance/handling debate between the two boats. Its all in good fun, but I would like some outside input on the subject, so I figured you guys could help us out. I will be posting this on the Baja thread also, just to be fair. Heres some specs....30 Outlaw 375 HP 496's. Boat does 75 MPH..... Bullet has 2 525 Hawks w/ bravo's. Dont know how fast it will be. Need to freshen engines over the winter. Any feedback on how these boats will fair against each other will be appriciated. Thanks for your help.
|
Keep in mind - Your boat will run faster in 3 foot waves than in calm water - You have a good shot of tapping 75 with 525HP. I am guessing you'll need to spin 4 blade 24's but some of the bullet guys probably have a much better clue. If you have 550 HP I think you could top 75 fairly consistently.
|
Ask the "Claymates!" which is the perferred boat. One does have a throne!
|
Two different boats, I will prove it. How many people are out buying 16 year old Baja's and redoing them???? The Baja will be faster in flat water because it weighs less. The Bullet will crush the Baja in 3 footers +, My guess is a 6900lbs Outlaw will be all over the place and run very loose in rough water, therefore it won't be able to maintain those levels of speed. Now for the Bullet owners what is the ride difference in a Bravo vs. TRS?
|
Just remember who carrys a 1 on the side.....and exactly what 4195 said " How many people are out buying 16 year old Baja's and redoing them???? "

Baja is faster, Cig is better in the rough stuff.
I believe the Cig is built better. I also personally like both the styling and the interior layout of the Bullet better. And I just LOVE correcting someone that says "you own one of those cigarette boats?" and I tell them No, I own an offshore boat made by the Cigarette Racing Team! However, Baja's are built well by production standards. |

I cant give you a number but Baja's do get redone a fair amount of times. I can give links to numerous threads in which these projects have taken place. No doubt a Cig will hold its value longer, but also is a bit more investment to get into. I think styling is all personal preference and pocketbooks.

i have a cafe, i was passed by a 30or35 baja i was doin about 65mph when i saw him again he had pulled back to handle 2-3 foot chop i never pulled back on my throttles as matter of fact i had a beverage in my hand, what i saw is that the baja connot handle rough water like a cig!
|
hello gys. i have also a cafe, my boat-buddy a bullet. my last boat where a outlaw (fairly i must told, a 24`. but often ride in a 33outlaw from an other buddy). my impression about both manufacturers is that cigs are verry more styrdy an solid fom each bolt. - from the cleats to the bolsters, from the (havyer) composite to the stringers a cig is more massive...an this is the secred in rough stuff!! for all this i less some miles (in smooth water) with a smile...

I think you'll be hard pressed to find either a Cig guy talking sh!t about a Baja or a Baja guy talking sh!t about a Cig. Many, many cig owners came from Bajas and most cig owners can appreciate the old school (cigarette) lines of Baja. As such, I think many Baja owners love the lines of cigs and would like to own a Cig some day.
I don't think there's much "debate" between the two. Most owners of either camp give respect where it's due. Having come from a Baja I can't say much negative about them. And I'd own another any day! |

oh sh1t im liking this thread. Any pics of some older cigs running the ruff stuff?

I've owned a 28 Cig and 3 Baja's including my current 29.
The Cig is definitely a more solidly built boat but I wouldn't take anything away from my Baja either. Like Tank said, I think most Baja guys know what Cigs are made of. My 29 has some features that the Bullet doesn't, huge cabin, wider beam, etc. Would I trade it for an equally equipped Bullet? I'd say yes, primarily because I mostly boat in the ocean. BUT, I run the Baja pretty hard and have in 3 footers without backing down! I guess the big question is how long can I do that for and how will the Baja hold up over time. I've had it for 3 years now and so far, so good. I would like to move up to a Gun or Cafe Racer someday though but I wouldn't rule out a 36 or 40 Outlaw either. It depends on the $. You will get into a Baja for less. |

Kreed i couldnt agree more. I love a long bow. I wish the Cafe had less cockpit/engine bay room since there is a sh1t ton of it and another 2.5 of bow. Take the 1 from engine bay and 1.5 from cockpit and have the long bow to crush better. Although need to think of weight dist. and gravity center. to much in back sucks to plane
Just a though -Mike |

-Mike i like how much room the cafe has. u can sit on the rear bench w/out hitting your knees on the bolsters, even enough room to have someone standing behind the bolsters while someone sits. The engine bay i can lay down in front of the motors, even with blowers, to do some work. I do wish the bow was longer, but thats what a bigger model is for. |
B i didnt say add 2.5 to the whole boat just move a couple things around with whats already there. Kev manifold is gone. But i can get you a set if you need them. Friend of mine down here has them

baja / bullet

I thought my outlaw was a good bang for the buck, i would compare a bullet to a baja and be concerned about speed. different rides different boats i went from trying to break 100mph in a 25 outlaw to crushing waves in a 75MPH Topgun and love it. would not give it up for speed take me to the big water.

Hey tony i did the same thing in my Velocity. 26/280 hull with a blow 10-71 589c.i. 1050 h.p. then i went for leanth and weight. But will still break 85 in the cafe from what im told.

Amen Tony!

Tony whats the differance in the 35 TG to the Cafe i know some one asked but i dont think and answere was given. Also you should bring that Cig up here some time to the CT. river and run to Claudios had a blast there can wait to go in the Cafe took the Hustler last time.

stinger the 35 is a cafe bottom with a cut down topgun deck no notch in the transom like the cafes. i only have 500efis in my topgun best i run is 77-78 but will be doing something soon its almost time to freshen up the motors. when do they have the runs on the ct river its not that far i live in north jersey by the tappan zee bridge would love to take a ride up next season and have some fun .

Apples and Oranges
As a Formula owner (for now) who has recently driven a 30 Baja and a 35 Cafe, I have to say that its really hard to compare them, they are both great boats, but their target audience is completely different.
The Baja is fast, its fun and light and gets on plane in an instant. Sort of like driving a tricked out go cart. The Cigarette is a beast! It could care less about rough water and just goes. A little slower out of the hole, but it could care less about rough water. Water that would have the Baja sailing is water that is just getting the Cigarette warmed up. As a comparison, I have a friend with a 43' Scarab, and the 35 Cafe handles the rough stuff just as well as it does, at least in the limited rough water time I've spent in either. The Baja will run right there in smoother water. As my buddy with the Baja likes to say, he can run off and hide until the water gets rough, then he figures he will be pulling into the docks while everyone else is already tired up enjoying a drink. As for the lines, yes, they both look great running across the lake, no about about it! |

When did they notch the cafe's? I have a 91 & there is no notch.

Yeah - I'm with Frank. I have never seen one that has a notch.
TG's came with notches after about 88 or 89 I believe?!?!?! |
No notch here.

We were having this friendly debate Saturday night with the two guys who own the Bullet and the Outlaw. I want to put this debate to bed once and for all. The Baja is half the price of the Cigarette and gets on plane in no time and is pretty fast with stock power (496's non ho) boat goes 75mph. The Cigarette is yes more expensive, does not come on plane as quickly, and will not go 75 with that power in fact it will need 300+ more horse power and some chop to get there. So if the Baja goes faster gets on plane quicker and costs half as much why does everyone want a Cigarette or compare their boat to one? My guess would be because somewhere along the way they got in some rough water and got their a$$ kicked and a Cig went by like nothing or they have gone for a ride. The truth is the Cig is heavier and has better build quality and a much better ride but yes it will be slower in flat water with the same power. Why don't we move on and compare the Pontiac Solstice with a Porsche 911 next :evilb:

There is something so be said about having your family feel safe while cruising along @ 55mph when all the "faster" boats can't seem to fly level or keep their props in the water... |
