Testing the 20' tomorrow!
1 Attachment(s)
Testing the 20' for a second time tomorrow with different prop. New heads and valve springs! Motors running great! Running 75mph with 23 3 blade at 4500 rpms so dropping to 21 3 blade. Should be running around 5600 rpms. Still have to getting her trimmed out. Supposed to be only 50 degrees tomorrow so should hit a good number!!

Here are the #'s from the prop calc, you would have to be running a 1.25 ratio drive, with 4% prop slip, nearly impossible.
|
Also, how does dropping one prop size(2") add 1100 RPM??

I would assume the ratio is 1.5:1 with a 1:1 tranny.

Thanks Greg,
I just wanna know what his formula for getting his 20 to do 75 at 4500 RPM, cuz, I run 5400-5800, and can only get 60 with the same prop?? I realize my 24 may be a little heavier, and I run a 1:75 gear, but I have tried everything, and cant get this pig over 60, his slip seems awful low. Think about it, we only ran 78 on a GREAT day in Tims 28, with 830 horse at 5250 running 28 Bravo's. |
As Greg said above, I mean nothing negative, in fact I would love to witness it, I'll even buy the gas, and pay for lunch and:drink:, congrats on a beutiful boat, and it will still be nice, even if the 75 doesnt work out, I would check your tach.

Cool boat CJ. I'll bet it is a ton of fun.
|
Thats my motor that CJ has in his boat. When it was dyno'd it put out 512 horse and 525 foot pounds of torque, at 5500 rpm's (3 pounds of boost). We were running 75 mph at 4500 rpm, and I can tell you that the motor was definately not running at its peak or anywhere near 5500. I didnt get a chance to look at the gear ratio on the trs however, we should not have had a problem spinning it up to 5500. all thats really left to say is that when we find that extra grand......stand by!

Congrats, Ill post some updates on mine as soon as i get it done. Sounds great man, just let me know in plenty of time! I've got a LOT going on right now, so planning is kind of essential for once, lol. :drink: Good luck with the run today CJ! Let us know how it went later on. :coolcowboy: |
CJ, the guy in the other thread has a black hawk for 2500, that would really kick it up a bit. looks great have fun with it!

I am not really familiar with TRS ratios. All I know is that I bought at 1979 20' Cigarette with a TRS and 350 small block from a guy, blew the motor, and my buddy built a small block with a blower that dynoed over 525 hp so I popped that motor in and it runs great!! Boat runs amazing and maybe Parnels and I GPSs might be off but we were both at 75mph. Not trying to compare a 20' Cig with a 24' Pantera with an 8' beam and probably weighs a couple thousand pounds more and from what I remember has an outboard?? Or a 28' Cig which I used to own.
|
Mine runs 85 at 5400 rpms, & 75ish at 4500-4700 rpms. I am however running a Bravo with a 21.
|
Those 20's are nice powerboats! There was/is a white 20....original owner....mint shape that ran for decades in the Navasink river. Great ride, solid feel.

Looks like you and C.J. will have to bring both boats to Boca to figure out how to slow them down!
http://vimeo.com/4374769 CJ & I both had 28's as well, and they have nooooo comparable traits to these 20's at all. Nothing about the way they run can be used to improve the way a 20 runs. |

I don't even know you and Greg says your good guy but every post you write you are being a dik and really cocky. I am sure you have a nice boat and sounds like you have done a lot or research on prop testing so how about you just keep to your little comments to yourself?? This thread is to let all my friends and good guys on here know what I have going on. Your obviously not one of them.

Sorry if ya think I am being a Dik, but first of all the 24 Pantera has a 6'7" Beam, and yes I have an outboard, but RPM is RPM, and gear ratio is gear ratio, 75 MPH at 4500 with a 23 does not compute?? You would have to have a seriously low gear ratio, and almost no slip. To change from a 23 to a 21 would only yield approx. 200 RPM, not 1100. The boat I was referring to as "Tim's" was a 28 Pantera with twin 415HP 502's, not a Cig, but since Tim works for Cig, we will forgive that one:drink: Please get some video next time out, and if all is true, I would like to pay your way to South FL to help me set up your boat, cuz you got the miracle setup there:grinser010:

Saturday was really cold and 40mph winds so couldn't test but me, Parnel and a couple of guys with 22' Donzis are running tomorrow afternoon!! Should be fun and congrats to Parn for running 80.3mph in his 16'!!
|
Keep us posted and good luck. Any pics of Parns boat?
|
OK,
so now that it is Monday, and I put the bottle down:drink: I apologize for doubting you. That is a very nice boat, as are the others on this thread. I am just saying the numbers do not compute, when I run a 1.5 ratio at those RPMs, and speeds thru any prop slip calculator, I get negative slip numbers. I see in the video, that I am mistaken, and I suppose that with enough power in a light boat, anything is possible, just that as an engineer I try to make sense of everything, and sometimes things happen that cant be explained. |
I know my 20 runs 75 mph @ 4500 rpm :boat:
with a Small Block with 1.50 B/H Rick OSG |
Hey Rick,
what prop are you running? CJ

Way back when, my 20 had a 406 pushing a little over 400 HP and it topped out right around 75 @ 5200 running a tweaked 4 blade Hydromotive which really worked well in the day, compared to the Cleavers and Mirages, which was about all there was back then. (almost 25 years ago now) Anyway, I know Hydromotives back then ran even sized pitches and I'm pretty sure I was swinging a L24.
Not sure if this helps, but if you drop the pitch and you don't notice a quick change in rpm, check your fuel real quickly and ensure you're not starving it on top. I'm just kind of surprised you're not able to swing a 23 with that much power? I can't fathom you're not running a 1.5 gear, so something doesn't seem to be adding up. Good luck! |

Hey guys ..... how do the 20 Cig. and the 22 Donzi compare ?
|
Has anyone pulled a 454 motor out of a 20 cig with TRS tranny? Very tight and was worried if there is enough room?

Rick
Glad to hear. I will be there so be safe and see you soon Parnell |
