There's been much debate over this but in the end, I think he named it after his "The Cigarette" race boat, calling the company Cigarette Racing Team.

Well I read in Smoking magazine this week in the library of my home:party-smiley-004: That it had to do with it being a smugglers boat, smuggling cigarette's when I get home I will read it again and get the information right or maybe this morning I also remember the first company of boats that he owned being named smugglers boat company and then it was sold or changed to Cigarette but again I will read it soon and post.

You are almost there. Don was born and raised in New York where he was a lifegaurd. The story goes that there was a smuggling boat during prohibition that moved booze into the mainland and was un-catchable. After selling Magnum and moving down the street once again. Cary boats was started on 188th. The 33 Cary race boat was called The Cigarette. Once the non-compete with Magnum was up Don formed Cigarette Racing Team and the rest is history. |
The original "cigarette" was an old booze and tobacco smuggling boat from the prohibition era in upstate New York.
Don named his race boat "The Cigarette". And now you know. |
