There's been much debate over this but in the end, I think he named it after his "The Cigarette" race boat, calling the company Cigarette Racing Team.

You are almost there. Don was born and raised in New York where he was a lifegaurd. The story goes that there was a smuggling boat during prohibition that moved booze into the mainland and was un-catchable.

After selling Magnum and moving down the street once again. Cary boats was started on 188th. The 33 Cary race boat was called The Cigarette. Once the non-compete with Magnum was up Don formed Cigarette Racing Team and the rest is history.

The original "cigarette" was an old booze and tobacco smuggling boat from the prohibition era in upstate New York.
Don named his race boat "The Cigarette".
And now you know.
