Cafe Cabin entrance door latch receiver
Not sure if anyone can assist me with this or not, but, what the hell....let's see what I get. :)
When my 1987 Cafe was recently restored, the painter.....I assume.....lost the receiver that mounts into the side of the dash board bulk head that accepts the latch and locking mechanism from the sliding cabin door. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase this receiver? Or, due to its age, will I have to have one fabricated? Thanks Guys!!!! |
Have you looked on perko.com? Thats where i have found a lot of the replacement latches.
|
Not to sound like a broken record but you might try Lip Ship
|
I hope someone answers this. I have been looking for one since I have owned my boat....
|
Want me to get a name or number off mine since it is still out of the boat?

-Mike Thank you......I appreciate it! I suppose, maybe, the following.... 1. A photo of the opening in the side of the dash bulkhead. 2. A photo, side shot, of the receiver that fits into the opening. 3. A photo, front shot, of the receiver that the door physically locks into. Other than that, I think that should cover it. Unless you see anything else that you think may be helpful. At the very least, that would help in having one fabricated, if necessary. Oh, with that said, maybe some measurement would be good. So, if necessary, I could provide the fabricator with the photos and some rough measurements. Thanks Mike!!!!! |
You got it. Ill do one better. Ill get the shots and take them to the shop with me so if you need anything else ill have it so i can get what you need.

I have access to a state-of-the-art machine shop. Not sure if the receiver is the same on my '91, but I know I can get these made no problem.

I spoke with Phil at Lip-Ship. He believes that this system was used up to 1995. He said that he's nearly certain that the entire mechanism (lock, latch and receiver) were fabricated by a company in Italy. If you could fabricate this piece, as it seems that's the only way that some of us will be able to get one, would be outstanding! I'll be the first order.........One please! :) |

-Mike Thank you!!!!!! I haven't ever seen the receiver from my boat. The piece isn't as I imagined it. And it appears, that it doesn't install counter sunk into the bulkhead huh? It installs, sticking out, and countersinks into the locking/latch mechanism then when the door closes? Once again, thank you!!! Is it possible for you to provide some measurements for possible hand fabrication? |
I can get them fab'd up the street from My shop. Aj give me a ring 774-644-7882. Let mem know if you it with a Micrometer or just a tape measure.

-Mike How did you send the package? This way I know who to look for. I received an email today that "appeared" to originate from USPS, indicating that my package couldn't be delivered due to an address error. It requested that I download the label and bring it in to the local branch. Needless to say, I couldn't download the "label" so I decided to visit the post office in person. They had immediately indicated to me that the "email" was a scam. Thanks, Anthony Hopefully, my computer won't crash now!!!!! Since I did attempt the download..........so far so good. |
Hey guys they were both sent usps. I sent the other one out yesterday. Let me know if you dont get them
-Mike |

Thanks a TON. Let me know what I owe you and how you want to get paid. THANK YOU MIKE!!!! Your guy did an amazing job on the fabrication. Regardless of whether or not it works, we still need to pay for them. Please advise as to how we should proceed with payment.........and how much. :) |
No way they better work and until installed I dont want to get paid.

-Mike With your boat currently under renovation, I wonder if you could answer a question for me? I can't imagine that the piece that you sent me just secures into the fiberglass with self tapping screws, right? Is there some kind of backer on the inside of the consul that the screws screw into for support? Or, is it through bolted with a metal plate on the inside? |
Sorry for disapointmnt screwed in. I kept all the hardware together and that is what i pulled out. And from what i remeber and I can go home and look after work i do not believed you can get to the back of it as its the bulk head between cockpit and cabin and its screwed into the bulkhead

Hey Ajocabazzi - just a thought I had the other day, but I am going to open one of my hatches the first time I slam the door shut - in case it needs some adjustment or something I want to be able to get to the inside of the boat in case the whole handle needs to be taken off or something.
Can't picture how it bolts together right now, so I might be WAY off base, but it crossed my mind...... |

Wow, no kidding, that's it huh? Crazy! You would think that there would be more than that. If someone wanted to "break in", all they would have to do is yank on the door hard enough and you'd pull the receiver right out of the bulkhead, no? Once the dash/gauge panel is removed, couldn't that area be accessed from that point?

-Mike So, you just hold it up to the bulk head and screw it in place? It appears that a hole will need to be made in the bulk head behind the receiver, as the latch is longer than the receiver is deep. Follow me? Is that how it is on your boat? In addition, it doesn't appear that the door will close flush, as the thickness of the mounting plate on the receiver will hold the door open slightly, right? Since it's not counter sunk. I suppose, once installed, weather stripping on the side of the door would fill the gap and help to prevent water from getting into the cabin, no? Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? Seems to make sense. |
