How Fast Should I be going?

How fast should my 1994 Cigarette TOP GUN be going with twin Supercharged 600hp engines at 5500rpm? I'm currently at 71 with full fuel and 2 people in the boat. Anyone with a similar setup?

t500hps 09-15-2010 05:48 PM

A buddy has a 1994 that Lipship redid in 2004. 500EFI's and bravos. Runs 68 any day and 72 under the right conditions.

Is the Lipship addition carbon fiber?

I hit 71 with Full Tanks....suppose to be 220 gallons.
1 - 1 1/2 foot chop in freshwater.

Anyone else?

Lipship did a complete restoration, but I don't think it was originally a Lipship boat. Not carbon fiber that he's aware of. 68 is in flat fresh water, he claims he's seen 75-76 in 2+ ft "chop" in salt water but without a GPS I find that hard to believe. I had a Formula 382 that was way faster at 3,500 (58) so we rarely ran together except on a few poker runs.

Remember, 220 gallons is heavy, I'm sure his boat is slower when full too.

What size props are you running?

Cafe - 502's with Wieand 177 blowers. I think they put out about 575.

Will run upper 60's in small water but will run about 75 in rough water. You HAVE to be in 3 footers to see speed out of the flat bottoms - honestly there is a tangible difference.

I run bravo 4 blades 26P.

I'm running labbed 26 pitch Maximus. I'm hitting my Rev limiter at 5500rpm. Also, I have them spinning out. I think I am going to add a little more cup, as it does not take very long to get to 5500rpm. I hope to see an increase when I spin them in. If all goes well, I am going to test them spinning in Saturday.

Urban you need 28p 4 blades. My buddy has a 1994 Top Gun with 600SC boat ran 80.6 gps last month when I was on it with 4 people 1/2 tank of fuel in 2' chop. You are definately over revving and will pull more mph when you lower rpm by going up in pitch. Your cruise speed will improve quite a bit as well!

5500 rpm is my max HP according to the dyno. They are roller motors. Does your buddy have labbed Bravo 1 props or Hydromotive? What RPM is running at WOT. This information will be very helpful.

The props are not labbed he is runnig 5100-5200. So for you I would get the 4 blade Bravos 28p and have BBlades lab them per your specs, it will feel like a new boat!!!!!

I would be happy hitting 80+ MPH, at lease for a while.
Do you know if they are spinning in or out?

I have SSMIII's so I cant help with speed, but just as an fyi you have 260 gallon fuel capacity, 130 per side.

Maelstrom TG38 09-22-2010 11:20 AM

I have a 1990 top gun with custom 454's with 177 blower, about 550 Dyno HP, I hit 72 once but 70 all time in choppy water, but 68 in calm water.
I have 5PX Hydromotive 25p labbed.

Maelstrom TG38 09-22-2010 11:21 AM

Would be happy to hit 80 one day with that boat also...!!!

osen007 09-22-2010 12:42 PM

Im running 23 pitch quicksilver torrent 3 blades turning 5300 at 68 gps in flat water if it helps. I was running 25 pitch 3 blades and could only turn 4900 rpm. I have outboard props on my boat and it really lifted it out of the water at w.o.t. it feels like a 26 foot boat. When I run the 25 picth mirage props it feels like a 40 foot boat glued to the water. They guy tells me it is the cheepest way to get me with in a few miles per hour with out spending the money on labbed props. Ask for Bill Sr. 800-338-8900 Prop shop. He will blow you away with his info I think he has 100 years experiance in props. I have a 38 flat deck with 600 H.P. 468 Tall deck roller motors Dyno at 600 H.P. a peice. Bill is located in Algonac Michigan right by Sunsation

barron 09-22-2010 01:09 PM

Put it on a trailer get the tow vehicle up to 80MPH and take a picture of the speedo. Problem Solved

Maelstrom TG38 09-22-2010 03:00 PM

I have no trailer Lol !!!

No I mean with some more power for sure (but how much...)

38tg 10-02-2010 08:10 PM

92 gun

700's bravo 4 blades merc labbed 28" with extra cup 1" short drives 5400rpm's light on fuel not alot of trim 78mph. i think i can almst turn a hair bigger prop

Smitty 10-02-2010 10:36 PM

Those 5 blades are costing you speed because they lift the transom up. You need 4 blades set up for bow lift. I have been down this road before.

Kool-Aid Man 10-05-2010 11:46 AM

I've got 1990 TG...800's...Konrad Drives...Bravo 1 4bl 30pitch (non labbed)..5300rpm..83mph all day long in flat water and full tank of gas..best seen 86 in chop....rev limiter at 5800rpm so needless to say leaving a little on the table...haven't got around to really playing with the props yet but probably will be giving bblades a call.

Have enough bow lift...need to get that flat a$$ end out of the water

I'm pretty much the same speeds. 800's with wet sump #6's. I'm turning a 29 pitch 4-blade @6000.

82.7 on flat water last week with completely full tanks. Upper 80's in some chop and light on fuel. It's an adrenaline rush when that beeotch starts galloping in the chop. That's when the speeds get up there with these old, heavy pigs.

I'm right there with ya on that point!

Before all my upgrades I had TRS drives and roughly 550hp running three blade (forgot the pitch size) and best ever was 68mph
