Rik,
No doubt the Arneson setup will run faster with less power. The V's have to be sucking 60-70 hp or more just in rolling resistance when wound up high enough to achieve these speeds. Even with V's these boats will still be dragging gearcase too. My routine is showing 992 lb of drag per gearcase at 100 mph (set 3" below hull bottom). If I change the paramters for an Arneson setup, I'll probably see close what you are saying. Did you do anything special to get bow lift your rigs, or do they go okay out of the box? |
I can tell you mine is one of the 90 mph boats, but the heaviest at a little over 14,000. It is a straight bottom, kevlar boat with half cabin. With Chief 900's and 5's on boxes I can reach 90. Maybe slightly more with 3 blades but I run 4 blades set more for midrange. Brandon hit it on the head about running smoother and smoother with more power and real drives.
For my kind of ocean running I prefer the non step stagger set up over the step bottom even though its slow. Carl |
As a (proud) owner of a 90 TG, I am very impressed of what is said in this thread....I didn't think this boat could reach these speeds....i mean....they are heavy bad ass !!!!
And I have Konrads too, and what kind of props can you put on them? (I am very curious of what props did cig92 boat have to reach 100mph+) |

Before you confuse yourself, & anyone else trying to learn about these boats in this thread, it's better if you don't try to compare the TS Cigarettes to the non-step Cigarettes. There's no comparison between the two hulls, so their characteristics are totally different from one another.
Non-step Top Guns run better & better, with more & more power. The non-step Guns I've been in with big power & drives, all ran MUCH smoother than the ones with small power & bravo or TRS drives. I haven't been in a non-step at any speed that felt like the boat was becoming a handful, and I've been in a few with 1000+hp & 6's. They're too big & heavy to "lighten up" enough to get out of control, unless the operator is REAL stupid. You will not be able to put enough power in a non-step to make it fast enough to become unstable. It would take substantial power to make one even kind of fast, so you're safe putting as much as 1200hp in if you wanted to. The more power you have in a non-step, the better the boat will ride. |

Not a thing. For some reasons everyone is under the illusion that the Arnesons are going to do something negative whereas the truth is totally opposite. Straight out of the box, they perform awesome and I for one am amazed when they tell me the speeds after reading how slow the other out-drives propel these same boats.

Rik, not trying to say anything negative whatsoever about Arnesons. My impression was simply that high-x drives and arnesons are usually suited best to stepped hulls and cats which don't need a lot of bow lift. I figured that a big old straight bottom might need some help carrying the nose. If you say it works, I believe you. What prop rake angle do you recommend on a big heavy straight bottom rig?

32 pitch 5 blade maximus. 5600-5700 rpm so far, will turn 6200. haven't done much prop testing but i can tell you some just wont work at all. the first set of 4 blades would blow out at 60 mph. it felt like a tranny let loose. the motors dynoed at 1175 hp and we detuned them to just under 1000 hp. it has been a great boat and loves the power.

I am curious though, you said that big power guns are smoother than small power bravo or trs boats. How does the ride and attitude compare between the trs/bravo boats and bigger power SSM boats?

I am also very curious of what you said...how can it be possible? because you can better control the nose by putting less trim or by throtelling like saccenti magic arm ?
The bigger powered ones have the "push" to eliminate the porpoise & to lighten up & run. They will blast some big waves if you have a big powered one, and they will turn some good numbers in calm water as well, from being able to free themselves without needing the optimal conditions. The smaller powered ones will flop around more due to not having the power to push through the conditions in some instances. |
Thanks for the explanation B, one last question: I have seen numerous power options on guns that have been in the classifieds, etc. So how much power does it take to free one up? I am sure 420s and 500s won't do it, but will 600s. I guess I want to know what is a good starting point for power.
Again, thanks for all the information. |
