Flatdeck with #6

Does any one no if there are any flatdeck's with #6 drives on them if so do they ( WORK )

Rick G 04-22-2011 02:42 PM

Great idea , I would think you would need stand off boxes to make it work. Though you might want to win a lottery first.

Rick I dont think that you would need stand off box cause any of the TOP GUNS that I have seen dont have any I would like to see a FLATDECK with them

I agree, since a Flat deck has no notch like the newer 36/38 's !
I mean i dont think you realy need them , but it would improve the #6's by a lot !

Rick G 04-23-2011 08:47 AM

Jay I'm no expert for sure but I figured because most of the # 5 's on flatdecks I've seen seem run to boxes it would benefit the #6 set up given it is also a short drive so to speak ( unlike the #3 or 3A drive).
The lottery crack still applies though.
Just my two cents.
RG.

Most Top Guns have a noched transom and the 38 flat deck did not. I would think a #6 with a box would work better.

CIG3 04-24-2011 09:24 PM

First issue is drives cost 2x of the boats value

cougarman 04-24-2011 10:11 PM

If your considering this on a 38' flat deck it will porpus with extension boxes. With just the drives you already get a 12" set back with the #6 transom assembly and it will work fine.

If you search the forums about 7 years back a chick had a 38 with boxes and #6s,..sweet set up and it porpused.....she didn't care cause she like how it looked.

But per the forum comments everyone that new the boat seemed to agree the boxes had to go. Im going off memory, ......so just do a search for 38s with 6s and see what pops up.

Here's mine (1988 Top Gun). No porpoise when trimmed correctly ;) :)

I cant tell are you using boxes also what do you have for power & get for speed

kvogt 04-28-2011 08:10 AM

I don't think you need boxes. Sixes are as far back as fives on boxes already. Sixes are also very heavy so I'd be worried about cog with that much weight back on boxes (and the boxes are not light).

Side note. My drives are also very heavy and the boat runs balanced. My thrust angles are a little different and the my setup favors a cog farther back on the boat.

I may be speaking out of my ass, but if you're going to have 60, 70, 80k in #6's hanging off the back why not consider the Arneson's?

Seems like they would be cheaper in the long run?!?!?

for them to work on your boat 100% perfect ....you either need to cut a notch in the transom or use boxes. The above 88 has a notch !!!!

kvogt 04-28-2011 10:33 AM

You can buy the wet sump drives pretty reasonable, its the plug in transom assemblies that are hard to find.

I've got a few good pics of Primal Instinct too, but I'm still looking for them.

I haven't ever seen or heard of a Flat Deck having 6's that I know of. They didn't start making 6's until a few year after the Flat Deck had been replaced with the Top Gun if I remember right.

No boxes, just the standard #6 setup that can be seen more easily on "Runnin With the Devil" above. I'm running big ci N/A's in the 750-800HP range per side and see mid 80's.

I dont no exactly what Im going to do for power but Im hoping to but some blower motors in the boat but Im still a long ways befor that

UltimateOffshore 04-28-2011 05:12 PM

Sounds to me like the #6's weren't the problem with the porpoising. I built an '84, 38 Flatdeck with ITS Bravo's and the X dim. as high as I could go and it still ran beautiful.

Thanks Blee,

You are correct............

There are two 38s in my area that have been converted also.
Curt Ganos has had his done for several years now.
NO BOXES,......he ran with Parnell alot with Parnells 41 Saber.

Last year Ben at Bens Precision Offshore converted a
38 for a Grand Haven mi local Mitch Joppich,..........NO BOXES on this
one either. Last I new Mitch had about 700 to 800 hp with plans to up the
power at a later date. Boat had 3A drives prior.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the correction, your right I was thinking of another flat deck that converted from TRS to #5s.

Anyways I went back and fixed my post to reflect 3A's.

Also fixed the typo on 8000 hp.......LOL

Doesn't help writing in an airport terminal from my phone:drink:

Finally back home now,......geeeesh little colder here.

Hope your well we should catch up one of these days!

Take care
Jon

Sorry, couldn't resist. I get corrected half the time I post, with good reason, lol.
It was interesting at Bens with your 6s going on Mitches boat, Mitches 3As going on Todds 38. Wonder where Todds TRS went to?
Your 6s were so nice I thought it was a mistake to paint them blue. But, look they are awesome. Your gundrilled titanium tiebar doesn't hurt either:drink::drink:

Lol,....:drink:...................yes lots of mods between three boats.

Speaking of tie bars,....here is the monster tie bar (Titanium)
weighing. ( 9.6 LBS ) after gundrilling the inside out. Weighed 15 LBS.
before drilling. :drink:

( Mitch's 38 cig with wetsump #6 conversion 1:62 gear ratio)
Torque multiplier,....lots of mid range acceleration:eek:

Mitch Joppich 38' 1.62 ratio WETsump

Curt Ganos 38' 1.62 ratio also,.........not sure if Curts is Wet or dry?

Dan Adams or Nautikitty would know for sure.

Nautkitty ( Parnell ) also ran the 1.62 in his 41' Saber
and Curt and Parnell ran together alot.

All these boats are maintained, wrenched on or stored at the same camp,
See a pattern with the gear ratio? It Works! Pretty tight group of enthusiast.

Besides you'll do more boating in mid range than top end
so why not have a gear that gives you the acceleration factor?

Thanks
Jon

 I'm running that setup as well. It does pull hard in the mid-range!

DareDevil 05-01-2011 08:15 AM

all the above boats have a notched transom...cant you see this !!!!

A Flatdeck has no notch ! i only know of one that does and it was done after the fact by Gary Kollofski !

Not sure of Oldschools power or speeds.

But Curts and Mitchs both in the 90s with with 1.62 ratio
and Parnells 41 Saber im pretty sure was a touch over tripple
digits with the same gear..

So anything from normal cruising, ............pulling right up
to WOT is going to pull very hard and very quick with this gear ratio.

The 1.62 acts as a torque multiplier,.....so it adds a nice adrenaline
factor to it when you pushing on the sticks.

3500 puts me at about 52 mph, 4000 is right at 60.....and 6000 puts me in the 83-85 range with 29 pitch props.

Good to hear about the windshield. The template worked OK?

When I first got my boat, it had twin 1240HPs and ran 112. I ran it like that for the first year....then moved down to something a little more wallet friendly :D (big CI naturals). I'm sure that I'll move back up close to 1000's in a few years. It's paid for and I'll have it forever. :)

What power is Curt running. I think that I remember it being 950 Chiefs??? Mid 90's for speeds?
