I would think the darker the color, the hotter the engine bay would be.
I agree the charcoal gives a custom look and won't show the dirt as much. However, over time, the colored bilges tend to look worse than white when they start to fade or get stained. |

While I have the engines out I'm thinking I might as well repaint the bilge. My question is what color??? It's currently white but I'm thinking maybe charcoal would like cool. Downtown i agree, white is standard and charcoal is considered more custom, but a lot more work too. Just not sure if it's worth it. Spent an hour on the phone with Sherman Williams with a material technician. He said this stuff would work the best for what I was doing! It went on like a thick paint, great hold on vertical surfaces. Hard like nails once cured! I did 4 coats to cover up all the grey. The grey really looks bad as it starts to wear so I am hoping the white looks better plus it is really hard to see into the bilge with a dark color. I went with a gloss to aid in cleaning of the bilge when it comes time. I taped up the gimbals and the few hydraulic lines I had coming Through the transom but only had to remove the bilge pumps. This is probably because most of my components (coolers, strainers, fuel pumps, fuel filters, etc. are all mounted on the engines so the bilge is pretty empty once I yank the engines :) No idea the long term durability as I just painted it this fall. Yeah the more I think about it I'm leaning towards white. For one it will be easier since it's already white. Two, I think a nice sparkling white bilge looks great...nice and clean and then the custom touches on the engines will still stand out just fine, maybe even more because they will be against white.
