Default weather striping in engine compartment

Does anyone know exactly where this is supposed to go. On my 2000 Mystique it looks like it fits inside the ridge between the outside, and the little lip created on the inside

all that said, is it really needed?

Keeps the gaps even so you don't end up with gel on gel contact. Also helps to keep any water out and running to the drains.
