Cigarette or fake
Hi all,
I might be buying a boat that is quoted as being a 1976 Cigarette. I can't add photos because this says "You may not post attachments". Any ideas how to get this changed? Thanks Peter |
Either you can purchase a membership, or upload your photos onto any one of the many photo sharing sites (flickr, photobucket, smugmug, picasaweb, etc.) out there and then post the links.

Cant you check the HIN?
|
Yes, look for a CRT hull number. Have it checked in the federal database by a dealer or USCG rep though, because a clever imposter can easily stamp one on.
The database should be able to produce the current and previous owners, and registration. If stuff isn't matching, that might be a sign of trouble. |
Thanks for the reply's. The boat is in mainland Spain and I live in one of the islands, so getting numbers etc could take some time.
I have added the photos that I have (small and not good) here I am hoping to get clearer photos soon and I have asked about the HIN number. tcelano. How would I go about "Have it checked in the federal database by a dealer or USCG rep" from Spain? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks Pete |

It's a 35 Awesome. In the 70's after Don Aronow had retired from racing, he took his 32 foot boat Cigarette[I] and stretched it to 36..it was over 9 feet wide. This boat was then stretched to a 40 footer. He had an idea that a narrower boat would be faster, so he designed a 35 foot boat with a 8 foot beam. He made two models with the same hull. One with a raised deck he called Awesome and one with a flat deck he called Mistress. The boat was actually 35 feet 9 inches. He often said it was the best boat he ever designed, it had just the right balance. Later in the 70's everyone wanted bigger boats, so he reluctantly stretched it to 37 feet and 6 inches and thus was born the Top Gun. He still said the 35 was a better boat. So that could be why it's quoted as 11 meter. The 550cv mercruisers is a bit confusing though. Also, as I have not seen any photos of the 70's Awesome, the helm area looks identical to the 28SS. I have also come across this: The name Awesome comes from the response that Richie Powers gave to Don after coming back from the ocean test of one of the new 35 foot designs. The first 35 went to Bob Nordskog and he never really set it up right...he was looking for all out speed rather than an all around fast boat that could handle the ocean too. Finally Richie Powers set one up as the 35 Dry Martini race boat and took it out for the ocean test. Don was waiting for his reaction to the test and the first thing Richie said when he returned to NE 188th St was.....Awesome. Don grinned and used the name for this production model boat with the high lift deck. The other 35 with the flat deck, was known as the Mistress.....the ad read..."Every man should have one |
Does anyone have photos of the inside of a standard 35 Awesome? Around the helm and other internal photos. Please.
