I hope to have the engines dressed out and installed in a couple months. |
Let me know when you decide what you are going to do with the hull and Trailor.

Quite honestly, it was a gamble that could have gone either way. Jim (the seller) sounded straight and honest so I took the leap of faith.

Ignition systems
The carburated 572s now have older Mercruiser V6 ignition systems, but I don't believe there are rev limiters. Does anyone have a suggestion on what ignition system might be better? I am leaning towards the MSD 6ML package with the billet ditributors, but I am open to suggestions. Bill

Bill I run 605 cu in N/A big blocks in my flat deck and I run the msd 6 ml boxes with merc distributors without issues. My motors make about 725 Hp.

I've experienced too many MSD failures to ever consider that route again. |
Biggus I can't argue with you last year had a small short and blu the port msd 400 bucks later solved the problem. I my try your set up this year.

Only problem with the merc ignitions is the early rev limiters caused some severe problems for me last year. Other than that great systems.

FWIW, I'm a big fan of the Thunderbolt IV w/the V6 module. It works well for your application, simple, reliable and can be diagnosed with a test light. No, it does not come with a rev limiter, but if you have to have one the HP500 carbed rev limiter will connect right up to the TB IV.

Mild is right!!!! Crane is the way to go. They hook right up to the MSD coil and Distributor. It also has a indicator light to show you whats going on and built in adjustable Rev limiters. Plus they are black and go with every paint option. It sucks running with a spare MSD box waiting for it to go out.

Dammit another thing you clowns are gonna make me order aren`t ya?
Someone hit me over the head with a lol stick!:lolhit: |
Thanks to all of you who responded. I am going to have to ditch the idea of the MSD 6ML and consider getting the rev limiter for what I already have - the Merc V6 box. The Crane box also sounds good since I wouldn't have to get a rev limiter and it would be a new system. Onwards, Bill

or daytona sensors make a better box than msd..set it with a laptop..http://www.daytona-sensors.com/CD1.html ps the daytona box looks like what crane use to sell,,crane box's are NLA so the daytona sensors are a identical match to cranes.. |
Ditch the MSD. Cost me a couple tow ins, and eventually an engine. Theres a reason "if" you see them in a race boat they have two moduels and a switch to change over mid race..
And spares in the truck.... |

You don't have to order anything but a U.S. Tow membership if you keep that other box
The cranes also have a tach test feature which is cool. The Daytona sensors boxes are top notch, and do some really cool stuff. But they aren't cheap. Same guys who designed the crane box |
I don't think the Cranes are USCG approved....

Stainless braided fuel line is NOT uscg approved either. Just sayin since we are on the uscg thing. Neither are my spark plug wires or plugs for that matter. :( |
