Straight bottom 90's Top Gun

For the guys with straight bottom 1990's Top Guns. I have a 1991 Top Gun, weighted 12,900 full of fuel. With 625 to 675 horse power what size props are you running and what speed and RPM are you seeing. I have Kondrads Drives , 26 pitch four blade Bravo 1 props. I have 555 cuin 630 hp engines. Props are in shop now will get them back next week. What should I expect ?

kvogt 11-20-2012 11:43 AM

I'm assuming TRS drives. 26 pitch bravo ones. 74 mph

smokin' gun 11-20-2012 12:14 PM

Ran mine with 26 bravo 1s trs 650 a side @ 5400

Bravo1 props won't fit on a TRS.;):D

I'm guessing 28 or maybe even labbed 30's on that and it should run close to 80 with that much HP. I'm not positive, but I think it was the 1993 to 1995's were layed up lighter so they could run in the upper 60's with 502's....

One more thing... Invest in a couple of spare drives! :D:lolhit::ernaehrung004:

Harvey 11-20-2012 12:33 PM

Forgot to say I'm running new Kondrads drives, 26 pitch Bravo's being worked at this time. 555 cuin 630 hp

OK, having a trans will eat up some HP.... but you should still be mid 70's+

oreo11zeus 11-20-2012 05:06 PM

smokin gun is correct as all of the speed predictions

36Envision 11-20-2012 07:18 PM

I have a 1995 525 EFI XR gun with Bravo I 26P props. I see 73-74 low on fuel & at most me & my tiny wife in the boat. It is a 71 MPH boat loaded with fuel & 4 adults. Not super fast but a good boat.

frickstyle 11-21-2012 09:23 AM

What's your guess on 800 a side min, Konrad, prop size? Strong mid range accel with respectable top end? I was thinking a 28 pitch gets 85 mph, am I close?

kreed 11-21-2012 02:37 PM

I would say damn close...800 HP may need 30P

Harvey 11-24-2012 11:41 AM

Thanks for the feed back. I guess I have the right props,I bought 26 pitch props couple years ago before I started this project. Been a long ordeal. Just about over. Should have props back from shop next week.

Yes you'll need 30's

Sick Stinger 11-25-2012 11:20 AM

The konrads are -2 shorter I believe then a standard TRS and claim just a swap of drives is 3-4 mph everything being equal. Good luck with the boat.

mmb 11-28-2012 09:06 PM

850 a side, Konrad PRS III Drives. 94 Gun runs 90mph... Best ever on the gps is 92

Are the Konrad PRS III surface drives? Konrad claimed 5-7 mph gain with the TRS upgrade, -1.7" replacements. So I would think 4mph is a more realistic number...? Anyone run a non surface drive, 90s Straight bottom, pleasure layout, close to or north of 95mph???

The Konrad TRS swap gains are typically 3-5 mph with the increased propshaft height.

my bad, not sure where I heard 5-7mph, wishful thinking I guess.....

Update on project. Two buddies of mine went out with me Saturday to do some water testing/tune. At WOT with hatch open they noticed water coming out of my tail pipe four inch exhaust hose going to the transom tips. The hose has two hose clamps on them. It only leaks at WOT. Boat only running 72 mph at 5000 rmp. My tips have baffles welded inside. So we think I have to much back pressure. Ordered new transon tips withwout baffles this morning. Any one else ever have this problem ? Has anyone changed tips and noticed a different in performance ?

Harvey 12-17-2012 05:18 PM

Update, installed 4" straight tips without mufflers. Boat runs 75.8 GPS @ 5500 rpm's spinning 26 pitch Bravo 1 props, 3/4 tank and three people. Sounds like a real boat now without mufflers. 11.5 hrs on new engines and Konrads drives. Changed engine oil today, change drive gear lube tomorrow. 67* today, high 60* Tuesday & Wed. Hope to burn the last bit of gas out and winterize. Happy with the boat now. Been a long project. Now just have to wait till May.

Hollowpoint 12-17-2012 07:28 PM

Give me a call if you go out again and want a rope monkey. I would love to check it out.

Thats with 850 HP a side and Konrads???? Sounds like you could use 28P props....or possibly a 5 Blade maximus.

I'd agree that something's off there. I had warned 525SC's putting out around 650 a side with 3a's in my 95 gun. Ran 74ish on GPS. With 850's you should be way faster.

By the way, where's the pics!?

Harvey 12-18-2012 04:53 PM

I'm not running 850's. I'm running 555 cuin merlin tall decks. I have my best torque of 630 at @ 4400 rpm. At wot at 5500 rpm I'm making 580 tq @ 607 hp. Running 75.8 mph. I'm spinning 26 p bravo 1 props. At 5200 rpm I's making 606 tq @ 600 hp. Should I leave my props as they are? Changed drive oil today. Konrads hold 6 qt each @ 22.95 a qt. 275.00 total. No discount. That hurt. Will be 60's Wed and Thurday, will take my last ride and then winterize.

Oh!!! Ok, you sound like you are pretty spot on then! Sounds to be running perfect. Sorry, I thought u had 850's....

SXM 01-25-2013 11:36 AM

I agree with Kreed.A lot of horses but not enough speed? my 96 with stock 502's runs 70 at 4900 rpm and im getting exhaust for it soon and tweek the props(they new 26) hope to get 3-4mph?

Harvey 01-26-2013 10:30 AM

SXM, I'm only make 630. Kreed started the 850 hp thing. I'm happy with 75.8mph. That was on slick water. Now winterized on lift. 12 hours on new engines and Konrads drives. Oil changed in engine and drives, waiting on spring weather.

You'll get 2-3 MPH more when you get in some good water getting some air under the boat. Sounds like it runs well. Congrats.

baronmarine 01-28-2013 07:13 PM

my 92 with carolina 575's, 3a's and 25 x17 wheels is running around 74 -75mph. i did rise the drives my 2" a couple of years ago. tank that surprise's me you did not see more mph.

Yeah where's the pix! And really interested in how this turns out...or maybe I shouldn't be cause it will be just another "upgrade" I will want to do to my boat :lolhit:

UrbanDisturbance 01-29-2013 08:53 AM

I can tell you one thing, I have the wrong props. Took forever to get on plane. I will have to get 5 blade, 18 inch diameter props. No WOT information at this time. Did a test run about a month ago and we had steering hydraulic issues and had to bring the boat back to shore. Boat should be ready within the next 2 weeks.

Urban disturbance - looking good. Post up your results once you test. I'm interested to see what the speed improvement may be. Cool project.

Arnesons look KILLER on the boat David!! Anyone know if you have to do that much cutting to put #6s on?

Harvey 01-30-2013 04:55 PM

Looking good, keep us informed and updated.

Zero Patience 02-03-2013 06:12 AM

looking forward to the next post about the arnesons performance. they look great.

soggy bottom 02-03-2013 06:27 AM

What gear ratio did you go with in your Arneson setup the 1.54 or the 1.32.
Thanks
