I have no idea whats wrong with it but its all over the road with sway in front of the cig. So bad I thought I was gonna lose the boat this weekend (flip over) hooked up a buddies dually and the thing was straight as an arrow no sway, better braking.. etc.
X is going up for sale, looking for a dually

I know the problem is technically solved...but did you find any differences between Ryan's trailer and yours?

Did you get your headers fixed?

Do you have air bags on the back? I had the same problem, way to much tongue weight. I installed the air bags and it tows fine now. I also have electric brakes on my trailer, not sure what you have.

A dually would be a nice option though

Yes, my axles are 6' from the rear of the trailer and most of all the other Cig. trailers are 5'3" Even the 41 Apache is 5 7".
So this trailer is not set up right , thats why my tongue weight is light, thats why it sways uncontrollably with the X, thats why I have to buy a another truck. I have no idea why those axles are so far forward.
Too late now I just redid the whole thing so I`m keeping it, don`t know what else to do.

I have the opposite problem with very little tongue weight..

No haven`t done anything with those yet, too pitted to really bother spending any $$ into.

Hey when they offer me mirror polished stainless I don`t say no.

c_deezy 05-03-2013 12:56 PM

Are you going to move the axles back over the next winter? It looks like the fenders were welded to the frame rails too, or else it wouldn't really big too big of a job to slice off the spring mounts and move them back half a foot or so. I doubt your drive guard added more than 100 lbs so that's probably not upsetting your balance compared to how it was originally. Even having to slice off the fenders and move them back isn't really that bad, a weekend project for everything.

Obviously you would have to repaint and I assume that's your main concern.

The dually will help with the control, but it sounds like it's more of a band-aid for a trailer that still has issues and could put you in a dangerous situation. Would hate to see anything happen to the boat or worse.

Nevermind on the speed.....just saw the speedo. 80

Rick G 09-16-2013 02:15 PM

ICDEDPPL , did you put spacers in your drives if so how much and did it improve planning ?
I have another question in post number 100 last picture it appears as if your trim rams at the drive are attached at two different locations am I seeing this correctly or is just an optical illusion . Not with standing the boat looks amazing . I am ready to mount the No 5 drives on my flat deck and without spacers the prop shaft should be one inch below the hull , I am starting at four inches below and will work ny way up. I am looking to find the sweet spot between planning and speed . Don't want have to do the 5,000 rpm shuffle to get her on plane .and would like to see mid 80's mph as well .
RG.

MILD THUNDER 09-16-2013 02:21 PM

Rick, I'll try to answer for Dan. When he bought boat, drives turning "out", and propshafts about .5 above bottom. Planed like crap. 5k rpm burnout and took a long time. Then he installed 2" spacers. Still 5krpm burnout. Then switched drives to turning "in" . Boat planes at 3500 now.

I'd like to see what it would do turning in, but no spacers.

What you are seeing with the trim rams is correct, and Dan fixed that . Now they are in their proper holes.

Rick G 09-16-2013 03:15 PM

Thanks Mild , I thought I was seeing things. When I last ran my boat it had No 3's at about 6 inches below the hull and man it would just walk up on plane at 2,000 rpm. I kow that won't happen with the 5's but 2,500 to 3,00 would be great . The one thing my 2 inch spacers have is a cavitation plate welded to the end of it and this suppose to act the same way it does on the 6 drive . My buddy also has 1 inche spacers that Gary Kofolski made with the cav plate extension integral, really cool piece . I will let you if the cav plate makes a difference if so Dan might consider having Gary make something or weld a hunk of aluminum on th end of the 2 inch spacer like the guy did on mine.
RG.

MILD THUNDER 09-16-2013 03:39 PM

Yes. My other buddy has 3A's on his Flatdeck. Planes no problem.

Another problem is with the IV and V drives is they just don't trim "in" very far .

tnt1 09-16-2013 04:10 PM

joe you guys need to look at my set up if you trim the front stud down you can trim in another inch or so

Hi Tommy like Mild said which stud ?
RG.

ICDEDPPL 09-16-2013 08:22 PM

I believe Tommy possibly did some grinding to the rear "rod" that holds rear trim rams, allowing the drive to tuck "in" more. I`m out of ram at that point.

Rick Id say 1" below bottom would be a good middle ground between planning and speed.

Ive tried a few 4 blades and after 15 minutes of trying everything could not get on plane ( with the 2" spacers at about 1.5" below bottom)... that begs the question; with a good prop that has a good amount of cup you could run a higher X dimension and still have good planing?

I think its a combination of both prop and depth.. I think depth may be a bandaid for bad props.
5 blades deep in the water (no rooster) is hard on drives.... Ideally Id like to get a 4 blade that would work with a 1" spacer...with good planing and better acceleration and around 5600 rpm.. right now shes kind of a dog at the top.
Theres a few props I have my eye on.

Id love to know how the spacer with the cavitation plate works for planning... I can have my guy make one locally.

I wish Franks marine would chime in hes got some combinations under his belt...

oh yeah and I finished the drive install after a long day at about 1 am... I messed up the ram location, noticed it in the water and had to do some beach mechanic work lol

I have been following your project all along, beautiful cig.My boat is set up like yours, kevlar ssm on boxe's.I have 4's with a 1" spacer and i'm about 1 inch above the bottom.I just put a pair of 18x26 5 blade 15 degree mercury prop's on and the boat is like a different animal campaired to any other prop I used,be it a 3 or 4 blade. It's gets on plan at about 2600-2800.Once on plan it hook's up excellent. If you are going with 5's I would try to keep the prop shaft even or 1 inch above the bottom,to deep is no good!! Try to stay with the largest diameter that you can spin.YOU have alot more h.p then me you should be able to run a larger prop then me.I will say a did run a large dia. 3 blade and it ran well but getting on plane was a pain in the butt.I hated it that way everytime you came off of plane it was a major event to get back up.I will try to get you some pictures of mine so you can see the drive height.BTW I love your engine hatch.
