factory rigged x-dim off 5/8" side for side?

Anyone else ever ran into this? My port drive was 5/8" higher than my star.noticed this when i layed out my new holes and its quite obvious.possibly why my boat handled for spit.i measured and measured time after time getting the same results.im just surprised to see the kind of tolerance on a cig much less any boat.i could understand 1/8"-1/4".just curious if anyone else has run into this.either way she's all trued up and almost ready for warm weather.

Were your drives centered off the centerline off the v or were they off to the port side?

Rbesola 12-19-2012 12:39 PM

Center lines seem to be good.the heights are(were) just off by a mile.

BGIII 12-19-2012 01:01 PM

How are you measuring?

Rbesola 12-19-2012 01:49 PM

Bottom center of transom up and over.jacked boat level shot a laser across at the first chine on both sides.also ran 2 8' straight edges along the bottom.also measured from notch up.for good measure i went from bottom of rub rail on each corner shot a line and measured down.regardless its fixed but i was wondering if this is common?

Too often a boat is not perfect when manufactured. I would measure from the bottom of hull (not notch) with a straight edge directly in front of the nose of the drive. Not the very bottom of the V. Make sure the drive is at neutral trim and measure up to the prop shaft center line. That will give you a very accurate measurement of drive height in relation to the bottom of the boat as the drive sees it.

Layed out, cut holes, hung the new hardware, checked, disassembled, painted and ready to throw it back together.

Sounds like your moving right along with your project. Gonna be a sweet setup when done.

Definitely learning alot.had to find a tail stock, rebuild the other, replace gimble ring, run all new steering, play with ppg's concept series paint and hopefully soon experiment with props.definitely enjoying the project though.

Let me rephrase, the boats almost ready for warm weather.if only i could take the boat to Jamaica next month.lol

jbraun2828 12-19-2012 08:29 PM

I have seen an 01 or 02 46 with the same issue. Starboard side was about 1 1/2 lower. Completely obvious from looking at the back of the boat. I couldn't believe it left the factory that way

Wow!?!?!?and i thought 5/8" was bad!

Don't take this as the gospel but for some reason I remember Sunsation used to slightly offset the X on their 32 Dominators on purpose.

So you've been to the South Shore Boat Club that is actually located on the North shore of the river?! :lolhit:

mobuzz 12-20-2012 02:48 PM

Scary huh? I used to ride my bike down there with my fishing rod and BB gun tied to the center bar. I'd throw my line in, and and then shoot at pigeons and rats.

Just like growing up in Mayberry!

My son always says, "everything you did as a kid that was fun, is illegal now".

I spend a good amount of time there.i actually belong to spring valley boat club just down river.not my ideal location for performance boating but we do have a very active boating community between all the clubs.

Love the river. I boat lock to lock North from Peoria to Starved Rock (putting in at Detwiller) and South between Peoria and LaGrange (putting in at Havana).

Sporting a family truckster 2004 Chaparral 260 SSi. I have a slip and lift at Clinton Marina right now so I don't get to the river as much as I used to. Still, I try to get there a couple times a year. I'll keep an eye out for your boat next year. It will be easy to spot. Beautiful boat! I can't ever recall seeing a Top Gun on the river.

Tinkerer 12-24-2012 08:36 AM

Did you raise both drives while you had it apart???
At least I hope you raised the low drive. Not the other way arround.

Rerigged with #4s on boxes 1" below hull (started from scratch)

Bill Dahl here in peoria told me 1.5-2" above the bottom but everyone else says even or just below so i hope i made the right choice going that deep. He has a 38' Sutphen with the same setup and Lambo's 1" above with 1600hrs on it that way. Time will tell. I just wish i could buy his motors:eekdrop:

This is not a dig on the brand; as it has been discussed discreetly a few times here which is where I learned of it.

The transom/top cap of the Top Gun mold was funny for many years. There was an inch or more of difference side to side and you could tell when you tried to mate up a swim platform as some of them had to have shimms added to make them fit right. This could have something to do with your measurement being off orginally.

With modern hull designs, having plugs and tooling formed & cut by computer aided equipment; these discrepancies have been removed from all modern hulls. You do have to make sure the floor of the building is level before you start though. :D One of the oldest ways to do this oddly enough, is with a "water level"

....Hence begs the question: Which came first; the water or the boat? (Or Ark?) :drink:

Where are you beached at in the pic? Looks too flat for Chilli (plus no bridge) and really doesn't look to be bare-a$$ beach either.

With the Notched transom, my 4's are 1.5'' below the bottom. No boxes. Planing can be tricky, esp in rough water. Once on plane runs great.
