Default Is Mercathode any good?

this could prob be asked in the general discussion forum but its on my cig so I thought I would ask here. I've got my transom striped and I removed the mercathode system to work on the transom, the question is, is it worth reinstalling? I've seen boats without them and the transom looks a lot cleaner and so does the engine compartment.any thoughts on weather I should keep it or ditch it, if it even works?
