27' Squadron XII project

about a year ago I bought a 1982 squadron XII 27'. It has a 496ho with bravo drive. It is an awesom ride but started to show her age.

So we decided to start a litle project on the boat.

Here is the boat the way I bought it

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...3A87628EF9.jpg

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...62764EAAC2.jpg

It came with this engine as well.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...62587CA9D8.jpg

I dont plan on rebuilding it, and really dont want to bother with the mechanical injection.

we brought the engine and drive down and started to strip the paint

When we removed the drive we noticed moisture in the transom. we gutted it all out and replaced with new, glassed and coated, and being sanded down soon.

took out the plastic windshield and replaced with fiberglass

will post more pics as it comes along,, :-)

I can understand about going away from the mechanical injection but ya' have to love the look of the old school geranium pots!

Always liked the 27... good luck with the build!

wow awesome job keep up the good work

CafeRacerPTY 08-19-2013 11:03 AM

We're about to start cutting put the transom for the drive mounting. I have this template for the job

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...psbb0aa129.jpg

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...ps10a008c9.jpg

previously my drive height was way too low and I was loosing some speed. I would be grateful if someone could advise:

what is a good height for a 27/8 squadron?

How can I meassure the X in order to calculate the closest to optimal drive height?

Thanks!

Not specifically. We were going for something classic and simple. Love the black red and silver combination.

Mercury makes a nice jig for drilling the transom, try to rent or borrow one from a marine rigging shop. If you set the prop shaft height at 2-1/2" below the hull, it should work very well. We did it using a standoff box and a -2 IMCO XR lower.

awesome project. i've always wanted one of these. how do they handle rough water as a sit-down boat? how does the ride compare to a 28SS?

thanks Barry. Here in Panama there are few boats with bravo drives and basically no new installations. they come cut out from the factory or before importation. I would have had to buy the jig for this one time (in the foreseeable future) so we decided to use the template.

The boats take rough water well. We are on the pacific ocean here so it does not get as choppy as the caribean/atlantic. having said that, we do get some 4-5 foot waves and strong winds from time to time. When it gets like that you just put some tabs down and the boat cuts through water like a knife.

Squadrons don't have cabins, and are a single engine boat. I have never ridden in one but since the 28ss is considerably heavier, I would asume it may feel like more of a wave pounder than the squadron.

Squadron weight is approx 5,000 lbs with engine etc. don't know about the 28ss but I am guessing more like 7,500 lbs??

great info - thanks! i believe my 28ss did weigh about 7500lbs, so makes sense that it may ride a little better in rough water with the added weight. tabs do make a difference though...

Hi guys..
Happy new year!. Sorry I haven't checked in in some time but don't have a lot of spare time on my hands so things with the boat have been moving very sloooowly..

Took some pictures today so you can see the progress.

Still Looking Awesome!

Looks fantastic!!..... You guys are killing me with these rebuilds. Wish I could take mine to those levels. What's the power gonna look like? Height of the windscreen looks great... Mines a bit too high for looks, but it does help with feeling like a deeper cockpit. Sometimes I wish I went with a bravo, but I was so tired of blowing TRS's.... 5 in 5 seasons. Didn't wanna chance it. Sometimes i also wish I had raised my drive up, or gone with a shorty, but then I get in rough water and love the feeling of staying on the throttle... And not having to lift even when the hull has aired out. I even run a five blade now, even though my prop shaft is 5 or 5.5. Inches down if I remember right, for the same reason - and to eliminate blowout in the turns while wakeboarding... At 18 mph!!. Gotta love those k-planes. Be sure to keep the pics coming.

RedMatter 01-30-2014 06:54 PM

Looks great. Good attention to detail. Love the color combination...but I'm partial...it's similar to mine. What kind of power are you going with?

Hey guys,

Its been a while since the last post. Slowly but surely things are coming together and she is now close to completion. We went with the same engine we had, a 496ho. It only has about 120hrs on it. we've installed the engine, front seats and all the gauges. Still missing the rest of the interior, walls and back seat.

With the increased drive height we reached the rev limiter with throttle to spare with a bravo 1 22" prop. then borrowed a bravo 1 24" prop and gained 3 mph @ 4,900 rpm. still think i can squeeze a mile or 2 out of it with a mirage plus 25" so im going to try that next.

here are some pics of the progress

WOW, looks GREAT!!!!

My only comment is to maybe celebrate the Squadron XII name a little more. Maybe the next time you do the graphics you could do something similar to what these guys did with the "Oval" on this Squadron 24.

Keep up the great work, you should be very proud!!

Cheers,

Dave

Looks awesome!!!

One thing you may want to consider is padding on the sides - I resisted for years because I wanted to keep the interior simple and clean as I could, but that sharp corner will get you in rough water, and you can't use it as an armrest either - cause it'll bang your elbow bone.

Oh, and did you replace the gas tank? Mine finally sprang a leak this spring - the aluminum corrodes from the outside in. Not a fun summer "should be boating instead" project.

CafeRacerPTY 06-17-2014 03:08 PM

Thanks!

yup. know what ur talking about. Actually they are padded. I have to take some more pics of the interior with more detail.

Thankfully the gas tank was replaced about 6 yrs ago by the previous owner. During the resto we had the floor up and were able to se the tank, was in good condition.

Next project will likely (hopefully!) be the power.

Yo!

Kept the 496HO power and eventually sold the boat not too long ago. did not want to really but just one of those cases that the offer was too tempting to leave ion the table.

Contemplating working on a 38TG project that is at my marina. no power and owner has another boat so maybe a chance to acquire the hull reasonably and start the project from blank hull up.

Regards to all!

Ghost24 10-09-2016 01:22 PM

Thanks for bringing that one back. Can I ask what kind of speed you saw with the 496HO in that hull?
