39 to 42X
Any 39 owners here make the move to a 42X? Rode on a 42X w/1350's at the Cigarette Rendezvous two years ago boat was blistering fast but haven't driven one. Interested if anyone has a perspective.

My friend Bob picked up the 42x with the 1100's in it and it is a beast! The turbo motors pull like a bear, it is a legit 120mph and it runs good in the rough. What I loved is when we ran 60-70 mph in legit 5-7' seas and it just ate it up. I could have poured martinis while we were running.
Very impressive boat. And yes, we raced a plane through Biscayne Bay. No idea where he came from.... but he didn't pull away from us! |
Thx Tom, gotta love the Cig vs plane picture.

Hey Gary. Never owned a 39 but had a lot of seat time. I didn't think there would be a huge difference but it is noticeable between it and a 42 in bigger water. 42 also seems to run flatter than a 39. 42 is a much deeper boat. I measured it against a 39 and from the floor to the top of the brow is almost 5" difference. Also makes the door 5" taller which makes it a lot easier to get in and out of the cabin. The back seat is over 9" taller. The engine room is huge. I have almost 2' from my front engine to the bulkhead. 700s almost look small in there but very nice for working on things.
Where you ever able to get a number for Ron H? |

How many did they make? You don't see a lot of them. That was always my favorite Cig model, how come there are not more? Price point (OL, Nortech, Cig 50 competition)? .

Awesome feedback Rob. To be completely honest there is not one thing I don't like about the 39, this is what makes this a tough one. The 39 / 700 package is a perfect match and I love the 'Hot Rod' look of the 39. I would like to do one more go-fast project and I must admit the 1350's are intriguing.
Thanks again, Gary |
The 42X has great lines but when they started putting the big turbo hatch on it that changed the look of it not in a good way (too high). It makes the boat look shorter than it is. If you build one, I would go with the 1100's and the original low pro hatch so you keep those nice lines, very fast and run on 89 oct.
|
Thx Ktron, the 1100's appear to be the same physical size as the 1350 only notable difference is the 1100 has a single throttle body the 1350 has a dual throttle body. I hear ya and agree on the hatch though.
|
Just an FYI, the hatch on my friends 42X was made more for airflow than clearance. The Turbo motors need a lot of air in and around them.
|
Have not seen a new cig build on OSO in a couple years. Yours may have been the last one that was posted. If you go through with it please share it again. BTW, as nice as your 39 came out, I'm looking forward to seeing the next one.

Hey 39 Unlimited,
I can't comment on the 42X, but I have a decent amount of time on the 39 w/ 1100's with my uncle who built the boat. The boat is blisteringly fast, and accelerates like a rocketship - especially in the midrange - while still being incredibly stable. The m8's certainly help in that regard as well. Also, I believe that you're correct in that the 1100 is the same size as the 1350. As for the hatch, take a look at his boat. He built his boat specifically wanting to keep the hatch as low as possible, and that led to the design with larger intakes on either side. It does cut down on the size of the sun pad, but it is pretty close to the height of the hatch on the 700 boats! It I'm not mistaken, cig built at least one 42X with the same design. |
If I were building a new 1350 powered cig to be run in open water, I would w/o a doubt go with the 42x (or even 46) over the 39. The extra length makes a significant difference when it comes time to lay all that power down to the water in anything but calm conditions.
|
I've seen several different 42X hatch styles with the turbo motors, all reduced sun pad area. Heard there was a 42X w/1100's at the Lake Lanier Poke Run last weekend, does anyone know the owner? Would like to speak with him if possible.

Just talking about boat/hull not the engines I dont think it would be worth it for the hit you would take on yours vs what you would spend for new. You already have 6's with real transmissions why don't you sell your 700s and put 1100s in? Guess you would need a new hatch too.
Gary, Talk to Bud about the 42. He seems to like the 39 better in big water. Although as someone mentioned, the 42 cockpit is way better. The 39 cockpit is a disappointment to me with its low freeboard. Very windy ride. |
I just stumbled across this thread and I'm both surprised and interested. I'm getting that itch that only a new boat can cure and I really like the 42X. I've crawled around on the 39 and it just doesn't have the cockpit room that I'm used to with my A.T. but I'm guessing the 42 would have.

39 unlimited
There's a 42x in Port Clinton that's at a powersport at boat shop, etc. It's listed with suncoast here in Oso classifieds if you wanna check one out. Has some salt issues but noting major. I like the amount of room they have and hull design. Don't waste your time putting a offer in salespeople they are douche bags. Offered them what they were asking took all my information and never returned a call. One of those it's forsale but it's not forsale waste your time deals. |

Hey Mike, believe it or not the actual floor space is about the same between the 39 & 42. 42 is a much deeper cockpit though. Thinking of leaving the cult huh? Will Tom still be your friend if you do that? |

Was serious about buying it but I just picked up a sweet top gun. Thanks though.

Originally had a 1992 38 TG w/525 SC Hawks, then I went from an 2006 39 TGU 525 boat that did 88 mph to a 2009 42X 700 boat that does 108 with 5 blade Herrings on it. Took it on the Key west Poker run last November (2013) and the boat was without compromise. The 700 package is more than enough power in this boat without the high maintenance required on the 1350's.
I loved my 39 until I purchased the 42X. A fabulous boat, deeper, faster, steadier and much better in the big water. Normally it is in New Jersey and the summer waters here can change in a matter of minutes. Never felt that I could not get back due to water conditions in this bad boy. Not using it much now, no time, left it in Florida so I would part with it if I find the right home for it. It is a one off paint scheme. Beyond beautiful, like nothing you have ever seen. 104 hours on it currently & always stored indoors other than on a lift June thru September for 2 seasons but with a deck cover of coarse to keep it clean and the sun off. I take it you have the computer flashed? 108 is real strong. Most are in the low 100s with the Whipple stage 3. Let's see some pics

Interested in boat as well.

I'm interested in your 42x. I'm in PA so not far. Right now I have a Donzi 38ZR with T-700s. Looking to move to Cig.

I'm guessing this ones mapped and Kevin's isn't. We'll be getting another boat in a year or so. As soon as the baby is old enough to actually enjoy it safely. Probably a CC but I wouldn't mind it being a cig! ;) |
