The first 37.6 Cigarettes were made by Jerry Jacoby asking Don if he could block the 39 foot mold. Don agreed and Jerry pulled his AJAC HAWK out and rigged it. Jerry had raced a 35 Cigarette with the same name the year before.
The name 37.6 referred to the length of the boat and this was in 1978. The first race that it ran in was the World Championship down in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The boat showed up in the pits there and we all wandered over to see just what this boat would look like. Positive reaction from just about everyone there. The boat was being throttled by Babby Saccenti and everyone gave it a good shot at the win. The water was so rough for that race that many boats, broke or had problems and the Italians won with an aluminum boat. First race of the American season was in California......I won that race with my newly designed JC Simon 38 foot TOP BANANA, the next boat a mile back was the 37.6 and Betty was a mile behind him in her 38 Scarab Kevlar special KAAMA. A few years later the movie TOP GUN came out starring Tom Cruise and the Cigarette began using that name for this model. From the inside scuttlebutt that I heard, during the transition from, one owner of the Cigarette company tot he next, there was a rush to make new tooling. Whoever made the new tooling, did not get the bottom right and the hulls that came out had problems. How bad? Well a couple of Cuban brothers set up a business that would straighten out the bottom problem for the new buyers of these boats and they had plenty of customers. Regardless of what year you buy, always have the bottom checked and if needed, blueprinted, so you know for sure your boat is the way it should be. |

Ahh, ok, you got the 20th anniversary Cig. I checked it out on the rack. I really dig the paint on that boat. My pops gun is just a few boats down with the full blue cover. It looks like the last cig is from MC. We probably did cross paths. Not sure if I will be back anytime soon. 2 vacation days left... Yay....

Some of these boats will hop in flat water no matter what you do. Tres said he can fix them if you think yours is doing it excessively. |
