Wow, thread hijack.

I've said this many times before. I trailer is a tool that accompanies your boat.

You can buy a Phillips screwdriver from Wal*Mart.
You can buy a Phillips screwdriver from a SnapOn wagon.

They both do the job.

But...
How long they do the job.
How well they do the job.
And the investment made by professional who wants a quality tool...

I guess only the "Elite" manufacturers build trailers that work properly. I guess only the "Elite" manufacturers build boats that are safe also. Lets kick the other 95% to the curb and all buy Skaters with Mycos so we can be sure those fiberglass diving boards are never seen again.

If you consider a garage with a front office an engineering department then yes they have one.

You must not read, I just elaborated on how I purchased a non myco trailer that was built well and fit the boat correctly. There are other trailer companies that follow this same philosophy.

It comes back to the original discussion. What do people think or consider good enough. Different levels of standards.

Pretty much goes without saying for everything in life.

With this topic it would appear that 95% of the trailers out there are at the lower end of the "good enough" spectrum according to the experts in this thread.

In Government Contracting, we have something called LPTA: Lowest Price, Technically Acceptable.

I call this an LPTA boat trailer, for X length of boat:

You get the above trailer when the buyer says: "I want the cheapest boat trailer that fits the boat."

But there is no need to bring butt-hurt in here because it's winter time.

There ARE OTHER OPTIONS that are middle ground,

Pretty sure all american, real extreme, myco, manning, heritage, pacific, load rite, etc all do it the right way. That would make 90%!!! :)

Although I have seen variation within a given trailer company, some models with a lot of overhang and others not. That would bring into question that engineering department and process control!!

ItsPeanut 12-04-2015 03:14 PM

I don't know if anybody noticed this but why did they keep blurring the 38 top gun logo. Anybody have any clue why?

shepnic74 12-04-2015 03:14 PM

You know it's definitely winter when we're arguing over how worthy a trailer is.

Holy Smokes 12-04-2015 03:54 PM

Consider this..... maybe, just maybe the wood bunks have a greater support capacity that the aluminum I-beam the trailer manufacturer uses. Sooooo, at that point the wood beam (aka bunk) is really holding up the I-beam and not the other way around.

Ooooh, ooooh! Can we talk about transom ratchet straps next?!?!

Are you holding a 10,000 lbs. boat down to the trailer?
Or are you old a 3.000 lbs. trailer up to the boat.?

You make a valid point. But still, you just lost 50% of your support as soon as the metal stops.

Just FYI, I think this thread has been great with minimal BS. The banter, discussion, opinions, experience and differences of opinion is what makes forums great. Just my .02

Not sure why you bought a new trailer. Your old one looks technically acceptable.

Those are called YardArms, and they are designed for it; 4 of them can support 40,000 lbs.

Years ago, OSO Steve and I used a pair of them (just two, somewhat at the CoG) to pick the entire (unrigged) OSO Gladiator up; and winch another trailer under it. That was exciting; we should have taken some video.

Simple answer, aluminum material properties are predictable, tested, and well documented. Wood on the other hand is not. What might look like a good piece of wood might have a knot in the middle and fail after carrying 2 lbs!!! :)

And no I'm not talking about that wood!!! lol

Never done anything like that before and the yard arms were older and weren`t working so perfectly (one got stuck and would not go up or down at one point)
I was $hitting my pants the entire time. Very nerve racking.

Grand Sports center let me borrow them to redo the trailer.

Interceptor 12-04-2015 07:08 PM

The subject trailer is obviously short for a 38 top gun, could work for a 38 Fountain.

F-2 Speedy 12-04-2015 07:14 PM

Damn, that is so cool, I wouldn't sleep till its back on the trailer, beautiful boat,

See ICD that's why I posted the Pinocchio pic on the cig pics thread you say you aren't buying boat parts for some time but it's in the blood and you don't put your rig up on stands and work on your trailer just to let it sit and not get her ready for next year. I bet By April you'll be foaming at the mouth and ready to rip

That is why I buy Craftsman. The more I mess up a tool, the more puzzled the floor sales people look, and quicker they give me a new one and send me on my way. It's only happened a couple times though, but I have a 1/4" ratchet that needs to go back.

Not only is your Snap-On guy stepping on his own dik by operating like that, he is violating his dealer agreement by doing that. Call Snap-On direct and they will make sure you are taken care of.

I've been through seemingly hundreds of tool guys throughout my career, the ones who I spend the most money with are the ones who are easiest to deal with no matter what.

Congratulations! Good looking boat. I hope everything works out for you. However, if that were my boat and I saw someone throwing a strap over the side & across the engine hatch to secure it to the trailer, I'd lose my cool very quickly. I'm curious why didn't they use straps from the d-rings on the transom to the last crossmember on the trailer?

Should be an easy tow back to NH, being at least 4000 lbs lighter than a typical TopGun.
