Beginner Cigarette Questions

Hi All. I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a '99 Top Gun and had some basic questions. This is my 4th boat, been boating for 20 years so consider myself somewhat knowledgeable, but admit this is my first Cigarette (mostly Baja before). Please forgive my ignorance here...
1) It has two 110 gallon fuel tanks and two gas gauges, but I see no transfer switch. Is there a switch somewhere I'm missing or is the flow between the two tanks constant?
2) Where is everyone mounting an amplifier? This has the full cabin, and I see absolutely no place where it would be both out of sight but still get airflow.
3) What is the chrome thing by the passenger side seat (they all seem to have it)? I did not have a chance to take a closer look at it.
4) Where are the freshwater and wastewater holding tanks? What about the pump for the freshwater?

I think that is all for now. Boat is not being advertised on OSO, but has passed a marine survey with flying colors and mechanical (compression/leakdown) so hopefully just a matter of time.

thanks!
Lou

Amplifier in the closet on the left in the cabin, no transfer pump, but they have ball valves under the access plates in the bilge

1)They drain equally. But note, the gauges will drop slower when full and then FAST under 1/4 tank because the cells are V'd.
2) as stated, in the small closet opposite of the head. I mounted 5 (one on the ceiling of the closet and still put fenders in there and never had them over heat).
3) fresh water flush for the cockpit. Stupid and I don't think anyone's ever used one in their cigarette...EVER.
4) don't know exactly where the tanks are, I want to say in front of the fuel cells. I believe the pumps are under the helm if memory serves me right. Or maybe in the head under the toilet. I don't remember - never used the head or fresh water. Lol
5) congrats!! Let's see some pics!

On my 1994 Cigarette Top Gun, the waste tank can only be seen if you take out the toilet. To get to the freshwater pump, you have to take out the panels inside the storage area (closet) on the port side where they are putting their amps.
I took out my toilet and holding tank and covered the hole with a custom cut plastic. I don't recommend using the toilet. Sticks really bad if you live in an area where it gets100 degrees. TEXAS. Bring a bucket for the girls or buy a portable toilet.

1- As Tank said- you get to 1/4 tank you Better find Fuel
4- Its called a Poop deck on the back of the boat for a reason- Head is for in the Bed

louisa6 03-01-2017 08:08 AM

Thanks everyone! Agree - I have never used the head on any previous boat, but just curious. Plus I boat LOTO and if the water is too cold, well chances are their is a bar/restaurant less than 1/2 mile away... The boat is a '99 Lip Ship, apparently owned by Phil himself for a while and then sold to a guy from Michigan in '07 timeframe where it was mostly stored. It will likely be the slowest Cigarette on LOTO with stock 502 MPI's, but was looking more for quality ride versus speed for my wife, 7 year old and 4 year old. I'm used to the old 29 Outlaw I just sold, so I'll be the guy taking forever to park at the docks. This is not the last of my questions - will likely have many more once I take delivery. Thanks again! Will post a pic once I figure out how.

36Envision 03-01-2017 08:22 AM

Congrats! See you on LOTO. You'll like the boat. My wife and I really enjoyed our 1995.

J-Bonz 03-01-2017 08:25 AM

Congrats! Sounds like you went with the one that has the notched strikes. That's a real sharp boat. You should be very excited

louisa6 03-01-2017 08:59 AM

Yep - it's the one with the notched strakes. And yes, very excited!

rak rua 03-01-2017 09:04 AM

That boat looked beautiful in the ad photos, congrats!
As you said, you may not be the fastest Cig out there but you'll be there every day because stock 502's will never let you down. Good choice IMO.

How fast is that boat with 502's?

F-2 Speedy 03-01-2017 10:41 AM

Im guessing low to mid 60's

Quinlan 03-01-2017 04:38 PM

We went from a 29 Outlaw to our T/S- Not much of a learning curve. Especially with the straight bottom. And a Little longer deck to look over lol

It's only a guess, I'll say mid 60's, but a great boat and very reliable.

louisa6 03-01-2017 06:42 PM

That's what I'm told - 65 and owner says he has seen a few mph higher with no load and light chop. We'll see, but honestly really looking for reliability and smoother ride. Telling the wife/kids we can't go on the water today because the boat wouldn't start would not go over well. I had the Outlaw for as long as I did because it never left me stranded, and over 9 summers never gave me a problem I could not fix in 30 minutes. People rag on Baja, but that 29 was a great boat. Thanks everyone for all of the advice and kind words!

Notched steikes? Which one is this?

ROGMAN 03-01-2017 07:28 PM

After you get the amps mounted, remove the cockpit shower (no one ever uses) and have someone glass it in. Then cut a hole for a 10" sub woofer. You will need a 1-2" spacer.
Post some pice!!!

You'd probably be very surprised how many Cigarette owners came from a Baja (me included). Great boats, probably the most underappreciated boat in the performance market.

There will always be somebody faster. What matters is enjoying yourself and having the best time!
Congratulations

Two Baja's and a Sonic later, I finally made it to a Cig!

Congrats, it looks to be a very clean boat! :ernaehrung004:

Unfortunately I can't post pics, but if you go to Boattrader.com and search on 1999 Cigarette in Michigan you'll see it. Ad says single step hull, but obviously that's wrong. The strakes have been modified so that there are 2 sections of the strakes taken out (not cut out - looks like it was molded that way). Not sure of any speed increase from this (if any) but from my research looks like an experiment that Phil (lip-ship) was doing at the time.

That boat came up on a previous thread and thisistank said pretty much that (if my memory is correct)........ Bit of an experiment at Lipship that didn't make any difference.

Enjoy!

Yes, exactly. No better, no worse.

trannyjoe 03-02-2017 12:33 PM

good luck nice boat when you hit 1/4 tank on fuel run to a gas station fast.

Very true. I found out the hard way in my 1995!

See post #5. Always like going back and reading that thread for a refresher.

Great old thread. I used to get into it with Rob about "the first twin step". Miami Two Step was the first actual TS (built for Chet Huffman and currently on the market from the second owner) but it was from the old molds. Robs "Rice Hauler" was the first TS from the new molds that was actually a true TS, not modified mold.

This boat that Luisa6 bought, was a project Phil messed with before steps were brought on. He was playing with the idea of steps and aerating the hull but it didn't do anything to step the strakes. I talked to him about it when it came up a long time ago. That boat is part of the evolutionary process into steps.

J-Bonz 03-16-2017 07:37 PM

I remember first time seeing Chet's boat was on a lip ship extravaganza video Rob let us barrow. It was amazing seeing the speed out of that boat compared to all the straight bottom guns! I did get to crawl in it when it was for sale at Typhoon in Tom's River, NJ back in 06.

It's for sale right now. I'd love to buy it. Always loved that boat and had some good times on it. The Zuls were/are bad azz and I love Zuls motors but the original 575's with all the hard stainless steel tubing was freakin cool as hell.

J-Bonz 03-16-2017 07:52 PM

It is a sweet boat! I dont remember the engine specifics but I was amazed how Rob's boat ran with the Zuls. That thing hauled the mail!

Richie builds a bad azz, tough as nails motor. Plus, they always look like candy you can eat :D

And the looked even better in a staggered Gladiator config.... :)
