That stinks.

If it was mine, and the transom and engine stringers were still solid, , I would run the hell out of it.
The forward stringers probably have at least four or five layers of glass over them.Hell the sides of the cockpit liner are 3/8 to half inch solid glass and the sides of the hull are over a half inch so the bottom in that area is probably at least an inch thick. I doubt your going to have an instant catastrophic hull failure running 75mph in that heavy beast. Back in 1986 I rebuilt a 1985 302 Kaama Formula that had been left overnight sunk in 8 foot surf. The next morning the only thing you could see was the windshield , the rest of the hull was buried. Anyways I wanted to pull the deck and liner out of it but the owner got talked out of it by the marina he kept it at.So I got all the sand I could out of it and finished the boat for the owner. 20 years later I am at a used boat show and I see it and the 2nd owner gets talking with me. I figured I may as well tell him what happened to the boat. After I told him the story , he than told me how every time he came in from beating the snot out of it, there was sand in the boat and he thought he was losing his mind. Just 2 years ago I saw that same boat for sale on this site. Formulas are great boats but I don't think they are built as heavy as a Cigarette. |
Furthermore, examine some of these balsa and foam core boats that have had hull failures or just heavy dock rash. You would be shocked how little glass is in them.
|
That's the thing this does not have nearly the glass the older ones do, I can literally move the stringer with my hand....
|
|
Nothing left in bulkhead
|
Trying to load videos not sure why they dont show up
|
|
So, it should show in top of this post. |
Take a holesaw and drill through the outer layer of glass, may as well see what ya got. Its not like its a secret anymore about whats up with the condition.
id be willing to bet that there an astonishing amount if wet boats that be used every year. |

I agree, this is one of the core samples I took, I guarantee many boats are wet and guys don't know, but I won't run one wet if I don't need to, I want a gun but mistress is dry so I'm ok to keep looking till I get what I want |
I'd run it and save my money up for a twin step. Cheaper to run, faster , and i think they rider better in the mid 70 range. At 80 is where the straight bottm gets up on top of the waves and really softens up the ride.

maybe a moisture meter for Christmas.......:santa:
|
I wouldnt sweat that rotten keel stringer and bulkhead . There is enough strength built into the hull at the keel area that its almost redundancy. Drill the other stringers and see what their like.
if you run that thing hard enough to break it you will be tearing it apart next year antways to cut the cabin liner out thats ratteling around. |
I'd bet ya most "dry" boats are actually wet if you dig deep enough. Especially 30 year old ones.
My Pantera was a heated garage kept boat its entire life. Never left in the water for more than a day or two (I know the previous 2 owners. One bought it new and the other guy had it until I bought it) it was "dry" as a bone except the rear stringers and 2 bulkheads were wet. Point being, 30 plus year old boats with wood in them are just about all wet. |

Don't Sweat it . That boat will break you in the Rough long before it breaks . Trust Me.

Tim, what do you suppose the bare hull is worth? I dont know a whole hell of a lot about the value of boats with known moisture. Did the Cafe completley go away?
|
There is a term used in Geology "Water always wins, if you don't believe me look at the Grand Canyon."
Applies to boats also. |
