All the 3A are big shaft, trust me I never thought it would be a problem. Lasted about 50hrs behind 950hp, 17x30 3 blades @ 5" below the bottom. I run it hard, never really "airs out" its a Mistress LOL! I have Broken 1 upper SSM3 and 3 lower gearsets on SSM3 and now the lower gearset on my SSM3a. Always the RH drive, never have broken a LH anything!!!!!

I agree with the weirdness of blowing a 3A. Beefy mo'fo's. I'd "set it and forget it" on my gun with 3a's, never worried about airing out really. Things ran like a champ.
From my understanding the SSM3's are closer to sizing to the TRS innards and the SSM4 is a shortened version of the SSM3, where the 3A is closer to internal sizing to the SSM6 and a SSM5 is a shortened version (lower) of the SSM3A. 3A's are well known for taking up to 1k HP.
Speaking of airing it out with 3A's (love being able to post pics again!!)

I have a line on a pair of 5s with a 3" spacer in them, I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried them on a boat like mine and if it would plane off or not, not really looking to go faster!

the 5’s are just about 6” shorter so just bolting then on will put them 1” above the bottom. I think it would be a good swap.

yea im sure, nothing as far as alignment is gonna break the lower gearset on 4 different drives. I wouldnt expect a 3 to take the abuse but i DID expect the 3a to hold up. Rh lower drive, by design is the weaker of the 2
