Question involving a transom notch
Just wondering if anyone out there has added a notch to the transom of a non notched gun or café racer with good results? I have found that only 3 or so cafe's came with the notch and is there a reason for that? It seems like it wouldn't be that big of a deal to add one especially if one was say like redoing the transom or stringers or whatever....I see claims of 3-5 mph gained with the notch so am just wondering if anyone has added one??
Thanks |
Hi BBWSTY search this forum I put a notch in 1985 Flat Deck . I did it so I could run number 5 drives and avoid using stand-off boxes . The thread was called how to put a notch in a flat deck . Rick G. |
Will do thanks!! How did it work out for you?? I'm sure it's probably all outlined in that thread but for sake of sparking thoughts on this one??

Boat runs great . Still working on prop combination but there is no porpose over 40 mph . I also have 3 inches of spacers in the drives and this year I am taking out 1 inch to free up the prop and hopefully not effect the planing . It jumps up on plane at 3000 rpm in a few seconds . RG. |
Rick, what props are you running now? Also, where is prop shaft measured to bottom of hull?
I spaced down 2" last year, going to go to 1" this year. I noticed that it simply could not get above a certain RPM with such big diameter props. |
From what I know unless your running shorter x dimension it’s not a huge gain, maybe 1/2 mph but also adding the famous porposing issue, my gun has no notch and does not hop like ones with notch with deep drives, the key is to get props into clean water |
I gotcha...makes sense..would boxes do essentially the same thing and not give you the hop?? The boats in question really are an 87 gun with konrads no notch obviously and a 90 café with bravos and no notch...not that I would do it if I ended up with one of these just curious really more than anything...trying to spark some conversation on the subject
thanks guys!! |

Yup same one...I saw it said sale pending but was thinking of calling on it again and see what the story is....guess that settles that lol...still looking at a café as well
Might still be a decent purchase on that gun...if the price is right of course....and depending on how far forward on the stringers is wet |

You can get that top gun for 25,000 cash I almost went to buy this weekend for parts boat, at that money with some work and a new interior you can have a decent gun for under 40-45,000... hard to find any decent ones under 45-50 these days |
Just called as I wanted to buy and fix it and was told by Ed at big thunder that hes already got a buyer for the drives and motors and is parting it out....too late I suppose...I woulda paid 30 for it even being a little wet...fiberglass and wood is cheap
bummer |
who’s Ed?

Ed Champion is @ big Thunder Marine
I talked to the owner of the boat, all sold but the engines...said someone had been jerking him around for a while about purchasing it, and decided to part it out |
I don't think the "rot" is that bad...sounds like its one stringer and a section of transom under the exhaust...I need to try and get ahold of him before he starts ripping it apart
|
Apparently the only thing left is the engines according to the owner...oh well
so back to the purpose of this thread...would this have been a good candidate to add a notch in the transom being it had to be replaced anyway?? Just wondering |
Hi Frick , I am running 17.5 dia 25 pitch four blades I have seen 75 mph top speed at 4600 rpm in 1 to 2 footers with 3 on board and a half load of fuel. I agree i think the dia is big for my application . The motors are built to run at least 5200 rom . Measuring from the bottom ahead of the notch I am at 2.75 inch below the running surface . I set it up so that i could get close to level with the bottom if i take the 3 inches of spacers out . Currrently it planes quite quickly with 6 people and a full load of fuel . I am not concerned so much with top end but I think if i raise the drive an inch and start to reduce dia I can see 5 to 7 mph without sacraficing plane time . I dont want to have spin the drives more than 2500 to 3000 rpm to get her up on plane . Right now it carries the bow nicely and i dont want to lose alot of leverage by going to high . I wil report back once I start to make the changes .

Rick - sounds like you're on the right track. I felt my boat was slower when I spaced "down" 2" and running 18" dia. props (Which is roughly 2" below the surface, on boxes and notched), top end came down, and wouldn't spin much over 5100. I ran it the first season even / no spacers and had challenges getting on plane. I think my sweet spot is 1" below, and I would like to try smaller dia. to see if the RPMs get up over 6K.

Full force , my motivation was two fold , one I wanted to upgrade from my number 3 drives to the stronger Number 5 drives and not spend the $ 15 k i would have needed to put the boxes on and secondly I was looking for improved speed and handling . It is faster , the drives are beafy and the notch improved the mid range handling characteristics and top speed . The upside is it only cost me the materials and the equivalent of about 70 thousand dollars of my time ( LOL ) small price to pay . Never said I was the sharpist pencil in the box . I must admit I think it was worth it for me as I enjoy that kind of punishment . RG.

not a café or tg but cigarette added a notch in my bullet in the 90s. from what I was told it helped that boat. once you figure it out and dial it in it doesn't hop at all. 3800 and 60mph smooth as can be.
