That is NOT a good deal. There’s a few threads about that boat. Basically a victim of Jewish lightning, and needs a TON of money dumped into it before its water ready. It’s a shame as it was one of my favorites that Dustin did.

I wouldn't make a ****show, non-running, vandalized, salvage-title, auction house Bullet my foray into go-fast boating. That's asking for a bad experience.....
That said, I've made enough bad decisions to not hold a lot of credibility so take my advice with a grain of salt..... |

Thanks for the pics. I tried to post pics of my boats to see if you recognized them but the first time they loaded to 90% and then hung. The second time my internet crashed and lost my work. The third time I got a notification that I can't post url's until I have 10 posts (didn't say anything about pics but error messages are FREQUENTLY wrong). Oh well. We live up in the Narrows, past Oak Shores, at the tip of Christmas Cove. |

Our boat is in Havasu right now, hoping it's finished up real soon and then we will be up in Naci most likely starting in June for a few trips through the summer. I'll let you know when we're up that way and we'll get you out on the boat. |
Re: needing ten posts prior to posting pictures:
I just counted my posts. I'm up to nine; this post makes ten. Just tried to attach a picture. Got the same "no URLs allowed" message. |
This post makes eleven:

No. It is Charissa, Me, and Shanay. OH, yes, that is in Las Tablas. July 4, 2018.

interesting your looking at that one. I tried getting some info on that bought. Emailed called and never heard from them. Thought it had potential but never heard back from anyone there. So I moved on.
My google research on "osmosis" had me worried. It osmosis a deal breaker or is it common on 30 year old hulls? And, there is that floor crack. Plus, like I said, It's in Canada. The dealer is nice, and I've talked with the current owner and it sounds like he's taken care of the boat during his ownership. I'm not real keen on the graphics, but that is easily changed with a wrap or new decals. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...29afa26ebe.jpg So, is this to be my first entry into the Cigarette club? |

It's priced within my budget. Actually well below my budget, but it has problems. The Survey showed up "osmosis above the chine" and, the transom "...has slight inception of osmosis". Other problems are acceptable like horn and navigational lights are inoperative (I'm and EE and can fix electrical stuff). It also has a floor crack that runs the "...full length of the cabin".

Is it cracked because something was dropped on it. Or is it cracked because the hull is twisting from faulty stringers. what year is it? Power? Drives? Last time it’s been gone thru? |
Osmosis is usually associated with boats that are stored in the water. Even with antifoul, osmosis can occur. I think you can get very small blisters, which are like dry bubbles but true osmosis is when the water gets into the outer layer. Osmosis "above the chine", meaning on the sides of the boat? That would be unusual. More common on the bottom.
If you pop open a blister and it's dry, I'd say not a huge deal. If clean water comes out, it needs attention. If water comes out and it stinks, that's full blown osmosis and needs a lot of work drying and refinishing. I'm sure some glass guy will jump in and give you a more professional opinion. RR |
It depends on if you really want a project, or if you want to go boating. It's not what you can see...but what you can't see. Where there is osmosis I would bet you will find all sorts of other concerns that you can't see, get a survey from a separate 3rd party, not one the dealer or owner knows, JMO from experience. I have bought boats before that are like the old Glamour Shots..."A little powder and a little paint will make you what you really ain't" that have almost caused a divorce. Just be careful, there are a ton of really nice rides out there, take your time and nose around. Many of the good ones aren't listed and are going to be word of mouth. Good luck!
|
look at a couple of the other threads here on guns that age, the stringers wound up being like sponges and they are pricey to fix, if this is way under your budget honestly imo it would be better to get something a little newer and in better condition 25k more in asking price could save you 40k+ down the road with repairs and lost time boating.
|
Surprised no ones talked about this Gun on here. Interesting to say the least. Price seems under market for whats there. Don't know if it's still available but this would be on my very short list if I were you.
https://www.powerboatlistings.com/view/64215 Frankly, if you're going to just boat on Naci I'd be looking hard at this Bullet. Redo the gauges and a little TLC and you'd have a perfect boat for Naci. - https://www.powerboatlistings.com/view/63197 This Cafe's been for sale for a while. Throw out an offer. Looks like a decent runner. https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1989...er-35-6921091/ This might be worth a look too. Needs work but good base. https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/199...p-gun-3659385/ |
Damn Tank - that TG looks like a great deal. It's modernized with a motor issue. I think that would be my choice and I'd just commit to sorting out the motor issue.........
|
The gun sold a month-6-weeks ago. Wife had her eye on it about 4 years ago or so when it was for sale at LOTO.

Yes, the one that's sold is the one I was talking about.....
It belonged to a member here for a long time. Think he sold it to the studio for this movie. Side note, wonder what the movie was all about or when it'll be out. The kid from Stranger things is shown seated in the passenger seat of one of the photos. Update: Did a little research and the boat was used in a indy project movie called Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia. Roughly following this boats "life". I'll watch it even though it sounds a bit trippy. https://variety.com/2020/film/review...ew-1203491490/ |
Is that caulk around the transom assembly? Usually a red flag for me.

The bottom paint itself should be a non-starter.
|
I agree with the bottom paint comment but not the sealant comment . When ever I install a gimbal I always use some sealant . If your transom is not perfectly flat it will leak over time and I HATE leaks . I have never owned a bravo boat 1 TRS and the rest SSM boats . To date none of the boats I put together have Leaked around the gimbal or tabs . Rick .

The white line around the tabs and drives? At first I thought it was taped off where his antifoul stopped. Zoom in, looks like sealant which doesn't inspire confidence.

per mercruiser...it’s supposed to go on dry. |
1Moses1 you are correct they are suppose to on dry . And a new hull that is true that works . On a 1980’s hull that is far from perfect I say good luck unless you have the time , resources and energy to make sure the surface is perfecting true . Your call . R G

Hi Thisistank (or is it just Tank):
I see you've had both a Cafe Racer and a Top Gun. I have looked at both an '88 Cafe Racer and an '89 Top Gun. Which of these models did you like the best? Will you be on Nacimiento for Memorial Day weekend? The main marina and launch ramp may still be closed but if you use the Oak Shores or Heritage ramp, the lake is open. We'll all look pretty funny floating around with masks on :) Doug |

We'll all look pretty funny floating around with masks on :) Doug Around 1990 Cigarette changed the Cabins in the cafe and gun to, in my opinion, one of the most comfy and best laid out cabins in its class. They also updated the bolsters to the headrest style, they went from round stainless “life line” railings to flat powdercoated style and some other small stuff. as stated already the gun hull (notched) is more efficient than the cafe. So with same power the guns gonna be slightly faster. the cockpit on the cafe is slightly smaller, the cabin feels the same even though it’s shorter. I like the fairing on the cafe and always wanted one so when it was time to buy another cig I started looking at cafes and then the one we eventually bought kinda fell in our lap. Used it all last summer and Now it’s in the process of being updated out in havasu. It’s not quite done yet but it’s getting there. I presume it’ll be back by memorial but we probably won’t be at naci, most likely will be running it out here in the big blue memorial weekend. We decided a long time ago, we don’t like “amateur weekends” ;) but will absolutely be up at naci a few times over the summer. if I can help you with anything let me know. Look forward to meeting you up there. Again, absolutely love it up there. Tank |
There is a Café on eBay now. I don't have any knowledge about the boat, but here is the link.

I wouldn't touch that boat in Canada. Uh-uh. The '89 Bullet in Jacksonville looks good too. What do you know about this Cafe Racer "In Heat". I got a Survey on it which looked OK, but then Covid hit and I had no way to get it from Florida. It's still available though: https://www.popyachts.com/high-perfo...florida-188111 |

What is wrong with the TG in Canada? I've got a deposit down on it and paid for a Survey. The "slight osmosis" is the only concern the surveyor had and he says that will take years before it needs to be addressed.

no offense to the seller or you as the buyer I personally wouldn’t want to mess with unknown blistering and a cracked cabin floor scares me. Makes me think it could be a Pandora’s box. If you’re good with it then you do you. Me? I don’t have the know how to mess with that type of stuff and don’t have the Checkbook to gamble with that big of potential unknowns.

Here is a Cigarette within your budget. Doesn't sound quite turn-key but would be worth checking out.

I came across a "Cigarette Owner's Rendezvous" hosted by the Performance Boat Center on LOTO in June. Has anyone here gone to this event? Is it an event where I could learn more about Cigarettes?
I passed on the Canadian TG. Too many unknowns. Thanks for keeping your eyes open for Cigarettes I might be interested in. I looked at that TG that was used in the movie but skipped it because it said "one engine needs work". Had I known the history of that boat (as y'all did) I might have not skipped it. Oh well, hind sight. |
There is a thread about 6 below this one on the Cig Rendezvous. Lots of people from here Go to that......
Good call on bailing on that Canadian Cig, I think you saved yourself...... |
