I passed on the Canadian TG. Too many unknowns. Thanks for keeping your eyes open for Cigarettes I might be interested in. I looked at that TG that was used in the movie but skipped it because it said "one engine needs work". Had I known the history of that boat (as y'all did) I might have not skipped it. Oh well, hind sight. |
Dustin had a decent 88 Bullet in OK. Needed some updating but was a great start. Give him as call.https://storage.bhs.cloud.ovh.net/v1...ddc59dd9b5.jpg

Doug you should really look into that Bullet. Seems very well priced and turn key. Like I said before, perfect size for Nacimiento and the cabin on the bullet is very user friendly. Only problem I can see with that boat is it will take 91 with those motors and they don’t sell 91 on the water so you’d have to go over to oak hill gas station. Not a deal breaker at all, just something to consider.

Not to hijack thread but this seems like a good deal. I don't know the boat or owner. But that is a screaming deal if it all checks out. I assume no trailer but still. Put Whipples on that and it runs 100. Biggus has one that runs 103-104.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ef286dae7f.jpg and that pic is funky but the full drives are there. You have to zoom in to see that the drives are up but I did a double take when you pinged that out. It does look like theirs on boxes or something and no lowers. Lol |

Hmmm, Sounds like yours could be up for sale... :)
but that still seems like a great deal on a very nice boat. |
I’m 100% with Frickstyle, as far as cost you can find a really decent cafe under 40,000 if you look enough.... top guns under 50,000 are not common and do pop up but need work, all will need work for sure just a matter of how much and your goals, my top gun was very cheap and nearly untouched, but I have already done many things to make it nicer and did aliens some coin too.
mistress is great also if you don’t need a big cabin, flat decks are also great but they are heavy so find one with SSM drives, personally if you wanna be over 500 hp get a SSM boat. |
So, My wife, daughter, and I are coming to the Cigarette Rendezvous in June. I'm going to hold off purchasing a Cigarette until after the event. Hopefully, I'll learn more about the models, drives, engines, and shortfalls of each to make a better informed decision on my Cigarette purchase. See y'all there! And thanks for your help.
|
I said I was going to wait until after the Rendezvous, then this Cafe showed up in classifieds. What do you all think?
https://www.offshoreonly.com/classif...er-o77783.html https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...adf2fa0870.jpg Thanks, Doug |
It’s been for sale for about a year. Asking price is good. Get it surveyed and go check it out. Couple things I’d do is leak down the motors and Make sure the transom is dry. For the price it’s a good buy. I’d immediately rip the dash out and update and throw new interior in it. That’s just me. Of course that’s exactly what I did to our cafe...and then some. Lol

One reason I'm excited about the 1989 Cafe Racer in Texas is the 496 EFI engines. I've been told the fuel injected engines are more reliable and need less tweaking. I've also been told the 496s 'sip' gas (i.e. are fuel efficient). What are the advantages of the 502 EFI vs the 496 EFI (and any other fuel injected Mercruisers)? I'm still learning.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5e17230176.jpg I'm the one in the yellow. |
Aye Cap'n!
I had a single 496HO in my last boat. It got very little use but it was awesome. From reading on here, the 496 is great if you service it properly, run it sensibly and don't modify it. I think most people here will say the 502 is a stronger platform to build on if you're chasing hp. (Different internals and stuff that I'm not too clued up on) Short answer, standard 496 is great. If you want to build more hp, 502 is much better. Are you shying away from the outboard idea? Personally, I love outboards and Bullets. I'd be looking into the one in your other thread. RR |

I wouldn't touch that boat in Canada. Uh-uh. |
Doug, did you talk with Blake? (with the Cafe). He's a nice guy. Just wondering if you made it out there to check it out.
|
Blake's Cafe is currently my top choice. It has a lot of advantages over the Florida boats, for one thing it's closer. I'm going to hold off moving forward until after the Rendezvous. Are you going to Osage Beach June 19?

We had a great time at the Cigarette Rendezvous.
I only saw one Cafe Racer (and I'm told it is on the market now), and it looks as good in person as in the photos. I spoke with Gene at Performance Boat Center about the Cafe Racer I'm considering and at first he was skeptical that it was under powered for such a heavy hull. After learning my priorities (reliable engines and smooth ride) and my current "no need for breakneck speed", he agreed a Cafe Racer w/ 496 EFIs might be a good choice. So I'm moving forward with my purchase. Perhaps my next post will be me with my first Go Fast. Have a safe and happy Fourth! We'll be on our lake: Nacimiento. Doug P.S. I'm unfamiliar with the term Flat Deck, please enlighten me. |

I'm now a Cigarette owner!
I drove from San Luis Obispo, CA to Spicewood, TX and drove back with a 1989 Cafe Racer w/ 496s and Bravo Ones. I won't be the fastest, but hopefully reliable. I've already identified many minor repairs that will keep me busy. I'm actually looking forward to fixing it up.
Quick question: How do I search the forums for answers to questions that I know someone must have asked/answered before? For example: I need to replace the trainer's winch; what should the rating be for a Cafe Racer (about 9000#)? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...74092be209.jpg 1989 Cafe Racer |
Congrats!!! Thinking a bunch of us are gonna head over to Catalina for the night on oct 10th. You guys should trailer down and go.
|
Congrats!!
Axles are pretty far forward , how`s it tow? (tongue weight might be on the light side) |

Axles are pretty far forward , how`s it tow? (tongue weight might be on the light side) WINCH RECOMMENDATION: I need to replace the winch. West Marine's website suggests the winch be rated at 3/4 the weight of the boat, so about 7500#. I'd like recommendations for a manual 7500# winch (Mfg in USA preferred). Thanks. |
7500# winch !? that seems over kill.
I use this 2000# unit, have for years, never let me down. my boat is heavy. https://www.fultonperformance.com/pr...Y1PpPaWrsBWHg= They also make a 2 stage model . you`ll have to see if a foot gives you more tongue weight , low tongue weight will make it wag the dog all over the road . Looks like you might be able to lower the winch post letting you move the boat even further forward and then move those boards up in the back . Get a cheap bathroom scale and this is a good method of figuring out tongue weight , |
Exhaust manifold fitting broke off.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e2d81f6258.jpg
I removed, painted, and replaced the wheels and winch post and updated the winch. Everything was going well until I started up the starboard engine for the first time since I brought the boat back from Texas. Water spewed into the hull from a fitting hanging near the exhaust manifold. It appears that this fitting sheared off the manifold; very few threads remain on the manifold. Any advice on how to fix this is appreciated. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a0da8054ab.jpg Port side of starboard engine exhaust manifold https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5058376041.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ea0c7c5689.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...18d18a61c4.jpg Brass fitting that broke off. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4d534fcf64.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...205332a8bb.jpg View of good fitting on port side of port engine. |
That's an aluminum fitting. Are there enough threads to screw on a new firing?
