Default Fuel Tank Crossover Question

Still getting used to my new-to-me Cafe Racer. Last weekend I was attempting to dock upwind (I know) at a restaurant and with both engines at idle, they both shut down together, and would not restart. After fending off the boat under 2 bridges (side by side) I opened the hatch and checked my fuel tank valves. Both port and starboard valves were open, but the crossover was closed. I opened the crossover and was able to fire both engines, dock at the restaurant and head home with no further issues. Since opening the crossover, my port fuel gauge (which I thought was inoperative) is giving about a half tank reading, same as the stbd guage.

Spoke to PO and he said he never had that issue. I have put probably 10 hours on the engines or more, and I think I should have had this problem earlier.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
