38 Top Gun winter upgrades
Had a great season last year, last trip out I lost a tooth or two on upper, locked it up and wiped out input shaft, snapped u joint, blew helmet apart, shattered bellow, was talking on water at ramp after stopping, had to go 15 miles at 8 mph, good part is it didn't take water while moving..
Can't complain the factory SSMIII have about 900 hours and 33 years never been apart, funny thing is the rest of gear looks new and bearings look new, don't see Bravos doing that. so in process I bought tons of SSM parts some to fix my 1.58 upper and sell leftovers, picked up a smoking deal on SSMIIIA Drives that are 1.68 ration recently serviced by Riggs, my props are all 26 spline so that will be nice and mine were a tad big so I am also hopping to be more dialed in at 1.68 ratio change. onky other real plan is to replace my A/C unit that finally died last fall, change oil and go boating. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6041b90d8.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0ae6dc1e9.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d3734d9af.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...94473b8c3.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d209fe3bb.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0e42e09b2.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...451d26266.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...de385631c.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f4b572814.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...adba9b348.jpeg |
Whats up North Coast Drive Service
|
Lol
|
Surprised you don’t run 4 blades. Drives look great. Way under rated drives. They’re fantastic.
|
I do run 4 blades usually the 3 blades came with the drives and may be perfect for my combo for a top end run, my 4 blades are great but lift stern a tad much, I should take diameter out but the props are great hate to change them.

DefaultWhen you get screwed in a set of 3A pins and can't find others, you make your own... glad I got bud die who machine things! Kept outer as 7/8" so I can retain my saddles and bushings from SSMIII

AC install looks nice. How did you end up mounting it?
|
Comes with clamps and mounts to floor in V berth, nice setup.
|
How long will it stay mounted?
Never mind, you don't go much out of your 5 mile radius so I guess you don't have much to worry about.....😀 |
I'm not sure what was changed between the 3 and 3A, but I was under the impression that the old 3's with 1.68 ratio had very little tooth contact at any given time, in the upper set. As in only one tooth in constant mesh.
I don't know this as a fact, just what I have been told. |

I don't know this as a fact, just what I have been told. Features & Benefits Large driveshaft splines provide greater torsional strength. Large vertical bearing in the upper housing provide increased rigidity for the driven gear and longer life. Large pinion bearings hold lower level gears more rigidly resulting in increased bearing life. Large propeller shaft is rear loading for improved shaft contact with the propeller. Input ratings are 750 HP and up to 750 foot pounds of torque. Extended nose on the gearcase improves water flow and boat handling. I never had a problem with the 3A's and I had over 900HP. Plus the 26 Spline shaft opens up the book to better prop selection, more blades and dialing in versus hard to find 19 spline and or adaptors. |

n updated version of the Mercury Racing III SSM drive, the III-A SSM drive features larger vertical bearings in the upper housing. The larger bearings provide increased rigidity for the driven gear, resulting in increased bearing capacity and longer life. Larger driveshaft splines provide greater strength, while larger pinion bearings hold lower bevel gears more rigidly, resulting in increased bearing life. A larger propeller shaft increases drive strength and is rear loading for improved shaft contact with the propeller. An extended “nose” on the gearcase improves water flow and boat handling.

are you concerned about stress risers in the necked down area of the new shafts?

Wish they still made the 3A and parts. Fantastic drive. Very underrated.

First trip out 2 weeks ago with 3A's same props as last year seem same speeds as my 1.58 at cruise, no WOT test yet. I would have thought I would lose some mph going to 1.68?
got a set of 3 blades with them I'm gonna compare this weekend, dude said the apache loved them.. stay tuned https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0dce62bfc.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...85b6a8134.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5a98c93b1e.png https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1d4979d42.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8b5778a49.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...838537564.jpeg |
Starting early, nice job boner!

Haha thx! Going to rack this sat!

Tim , looking good . I am kinda sorry I got rid of the Hawk off my Flat deck . If you ever get out on lake Ontario let me know . Toronto by water is pretty cool . Lots of spots to boat to for a freshment or 2 . Cheers RG.

Thank you I really appreciate the compliments, I would love to repaint my boat one day but I want it exactly the way it is, The only thing I would probably change is putting the dealer back on the side the way it came from Everglades.
I would like to do the all school reunion this year I'm trying to find out when that's going to be I think it's on Lake St. Clair |
Not bad for 34
